Have you ever had a social media friend? You know, someone you engage with all the time on Instagram — you have this great rapport, you feel like you know them on a deeper level, but you’ve never actually met in person? Well, Will Smith and Tom Holland had something like that going on… only, instead of Instagram, they’ve been working on a movie together for the last 2 years, despite never actually meeting each other. That is, until they did an escape room together…
The animated film, Spies in Disguise, features Smith and Holland as an unlikely duo — a super spy turned into a pigeon, and a nerdy tech officer enlisted to help him save the world (and regain his human form, of course). And despite what Smith describes as their ‘spectacular chemistry’ on screen, the pair had never had the chance to meet.
Come on, what better way to officially rub elbows and bond with your co-star, than to do an escape room together? And to film it, of course.
In the latest video added to Smith’s YouTube channel today (which boasts 7.31M subscribers, by the way), he and Holland hilariously battled through the Escape Hotel. And in case you thought it would be a walk in the park… well, not quite. The two were immediately blindfolded — which apparently wasn’t the way Holland normally likes to be blindfolded — and led into separate rooms.
The mission is simple: they have to figure out how the unlock the doors and get to each other. A video quickly informs them they are being held in a military prison for espionage, and the man on screen says “If you’re thinking about escaping, you better think and act like a spy.” Well, Holland and Smith have been thinking as spies (in separate rooms, no less) for the last 2 years, so no problem… right?
Never missing a beat, Smith yells over to the Spider-Man star, “you should use your spider senses to get us out of here…” Once Holland gets his bearing, we can hear him uttering “I feel like James Bond man, this is sick!”
Eventually, Holland figures out one of the clues and excitedly yells, “I freed Will Smith!” Once together, the pair arrives at the final stage of the escape room — and guess what the last code they had to figure out was? The release date for their movie. Clever. We should have known.
Seeing the camaraderie these two shared, and the many jokes hurled back and forth between rooms, it’s honestly hard to believe they just met. Earlier in the video, Holland had mentioned that he feels like he’s met Smith, since he grew up watching his films, and perhaps that contributed to their easy banter. Either way, the two made fast friends — and they might be our new favourite duo… both on-screen, and in escape rooms.
Spies in Disguise hits theatres everywhere on Christmas Day.
