Toronto Public Health is getting some flack and some praise for a recent Facebook update they made on Valentine’s Day (February 14). They’ve managed to stir up quite a conversation with just an animated pinky finger. The art was captioned, “I am going to give you every inch of me. Even though we use the metric system. Whatever we do this Valentine’s Day, let’s wrap it up.”

And while it does elicit a chuckle, it has some questioning whether they’ve taken it too far.

We’ll let you judge for yourself…

So, what do you think? Is that offside, or perfectly clever and poignant? Judging by the number of shares and likes, most people find the metaphorical gif and accompanying caption funny and/or important, but there are some in the comments section who disagree.

“This is so inappropriate for a government agency to make this sort of statement,” one user writes. We suppose they have a point–we’re not very accustomed to receiving sexual innuendos from our governing bodies via social media.

On the flip side, another commenter adds, “ITT: people learning, seemingly for the first time, that unprotected sex is a public health concern and, thus, a concern to Toronto Public Health.” Also fair. Because sex happens whether we share gifs about it or not, and it’s important to know about the health risks involved.

So, it’s basically like everything else the government does–some approve and others not so much. C’est la vie, or, c’est le gouvernement, anyway.

To us, the fact that it’s funny and shareable is a pretty solid argument for it being a good ad–it’s meant to reach people who are sexually active, after all, and that’s what it’s doing.

Either way, it’s certainly got our attention.
