'Troop Beverly Hills' is officially getting a sequel

Phyllis Nefler once said, “I may be a beginner at some things, but I’ve got a black belt in shopping." Well, it seems she might also have a black belt in epic comebacks, because Sony Pictures is officially bringing 1989’s Troop Beverly Hills back to life with the sequel we didn’t know we needed. Think blowouts, high fashion, high standards, one-liners, and luxury tents — but you know, the 2020 version.

For fans who need a quick refresher, the original Troop Beverly Hills followed pampered L.A. housewife Phyllis Nefler, played by Shelley Long, throwing herself into truly uncharted territory when she joins her daughter’s Wilderness Girls scout group. The film became an instant classic, as audience members were enchanted by the main character’s unique ability to apply her Rodeo Drive lifestyle to the great outdoors, while trying to prove that she can be a troop leader.

The sequel, which is not yet titled, will be a debut feature for director Oran Zegman, with The Greatest Showman producer Laurence Mark also boarding the project. Aeysha Carr, showrunner for Hulu’s new comedy series Woke, has written the screenplay. Carr is no stranger to rebooting classics; she's also writing Paramount’s reboot of Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and she obviously knows her comedy, with previous writing credits on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Everybody Hates Chris, to name a few. After screenplay writer Tamara Chestna will also write for the film.

Fries.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room — who will star in the sequel? Could Shelley Long return? What about Carla Gugino, Tori Spelling, or Jenny Lewis, who has since gone on to find success as the lead singer for Rilo Kiley and as a solo artist.

Or, will the sequel offer up a brand new cast to give their take on the original characters? Anna Faris seems like a natural fit, and it looks like Twitter agrees. The news of a Troop Beverly Hills sequel comes on the same day that Faris announced she won't be returning for an eighth season of Mom, so it might be the perfect time for the beloved star to take on new projects.

Either way, we can't wait.
