After 15 months of being husband and wife, the marriage between actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard came to a crashing end in May 2016. Secretly recorded footage of the couple fighting was released, showing Depp becoming angry and violent towards his then-wife. Following the couple’s divorce, Heard stated that she would be donating all the money from the settlement to charities and has now made good on her word.

Heard was awarded $7 million in the divorce settlement and has now donated the money to causes close to her heart, including children’s medical aid and the prevention of violence against women.

The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where Heard has been a volunteer for the past ten years, recently released their list of donors for 2017. Ms. Amber Heard is listed on the Honor Roll of Donors site, which includes individuals and companies who donated between $1 million and $5 million during the time period of July 2016 to June 2017.

Heard has also said she will be donating money to the American Civil Liberties Union, though the charity has yet to comment on how much the actor has donated, but we would guess a cool $2 million to wrap up the amount left in her divorce settlement.

Only a few days after Heard filed for divorce and issued a restraining order against Depp, People Magazine released images of the actor with bruises on her face, allegedly showing abuse by Depp. As for the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, his lawyers retaliated by saying that Heard was “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”

Following the finalization of the couple’s divorce, Heard released a statement saying “As described in the restraining order and divorce settlement, money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.”

With Heard having now donated her divorce settlement, it’s clear to see that character defamation and financial gain were never her end goals. While $7 million may not be a lot of money to Depp (he was reportedly worth $48 million in 2017), it’s a big chunk of money to most people, Heard included, which makes her decision to donate money from a bad situation to a number of great causes even more amazing. Also, get that tax credit, Amber.
