North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and United States President Donald J. Trump met in Vietnam this week for their second U.S.-North Korea Summit. The two leaders arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam Monday and met for talks about North Korea’s possible denuclearization. At the last summit in June 2018, Kim and Trump agreed to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, but it is still unclear what that would mean specifically for either side.
While the talks appeared to be going well from the outside with Kim and Trump appearing to vibe like old friends, the reality was far less positive. The summit was cut short abruptly with no deal when both parties cancelled a lunch that was supposed to take place Wednesday afternoon and headed home instead.
Check out the whole debacle below:
Trump and Kim didn’t make a deal, but they still had a nice dinner

SmizeWell, not all smiles. The two also posed for a quick “serious” handshake. You know, for important diplomatic reasons. SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images
“A nice private dinner”The two then sat down for a four-course working dinner where Trump joked, gesturing to the gaggle of photographers, “Look at our nice private dinner.” He also quipped to those snapping pics, “Make us look good tonight.” The meal consisted of a shrimp cocktail, grilled sirloin with pear kimchi, chocolate lava cake and a traditional Korean dried persimmon punch called sujeonggwa. More private than it seemedWhile Trump joked that the reporters were crashing his “private dinner” with Kim, there was something a lot less funny going on as well. Moments before the sit-down, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders had barred four print journalists from entering the room after they asked questions critical of the president. Post-dinner hang outsAfter the two-hour dinner, Trump and Kim posed outside the dining room again for more press shots and a brief talk with reporters. Trump was particularly complimentary to Kim, saying, “I think that your country has tremendous economic potential. Unbelievable. Unlimited. I think you will have a tremendous future with your country -- a great leader. And I look forward to watching it happen and helping it to happen.” SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images
Equal or greaterTrump added that they had a lot of work to do the following day but “I thought the first summit was a great success and I think this one hopefully will be equal or greater than the first.”

A morning strollOn Wednesday, the two leaders took a stroll through a garden at the Metropole hotel, accompanied by a translator and Kim’s sister Kim Yo-jong. It has been reported that the First Sister is hugely influential in the North Korean government and reporters noted that she was at her brother’s side the entire summit. SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images
Kim fields questionsAmong other anti-democratic things, North Korea is known for its lack of free press with the media serving as Kim Jong Un’s personal information relay system and hype squad. During his meeting with Trump, Kim fielded questions from foreign reporters possibly for the first time. When asked if he was willing to denuclearize, Kim answered, “If I’m not willing do that I wouldn’t be here right now.” SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images
No dealAfter their complimentary meeting, and all that positive talk, it was still “No deal, Howie.” Trump said he and Kim had “very good discussions” and “there were a lot of great ideas thrown about.” He added that there’s “no rush” to come to a deal. SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images
Yup.That picture just about sums it up. The two leaders cut their summit short Wednesday, abruptly cancelling a working lunch which was already set and awaiting them. Awkward. SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images
