It’s one of those stereotypes we didn’t want to believe, that men are turned off by intelligent women. But a new study that looked at volunteers on speed dates suggests that the stereotype may actually have some truth to it.

We need to have a sit down with all men. Can we arrange that? Because this just doesn’t make sense.

The study published in the journal of Personality and Individual Differences surveyed 560 Columbia University students and a total of 4,000 speed dates. Each couple was given four minutes to get to know their partner, and then asked to log their thoughts—and make a rating on attractiveness and intelligence—for each of the potential mates.

The results? Kind of depressing, actually.

According to the findings, men are less attracted to smart women unless they are also incredibly good looking. So semi-attractive women who ranked high on the smarts chart were less attractive in the men’s eyes. In other words, smart is fine up to a point, then she’s too smart and has to make up for that fact by being increasingly good looking.

What the heck is going on, dudes!?

Us ladies, on the other hand, were struck by guys who were either attractive and/or smart. Nope, you don’t have to be some super Chris-Hemsworth-meets-Bill-Nye-the-Science-Guy hybrid to win over our hearts.

The study seems to suggest that cleverness is inversely related to attractiveness, from a man’s perspective at least.

Now, generalized statements like this one above certainly don’t mean that EVERY guy in the world finds intelligence unattractive. We know plenty of dudes who find smart sexy. So we’re a bit skeptical of the findings… or maybe it’s just disappointment. Or a maybe a mix of both.

Either way, we’re never going to dumb ourselves down. Nope, not happening.
