The coronavirus is continuing to wreak havoc on the entertainment world, and we’re not just talking about Tom Hanks, who must be protected at all costs. After shutting down production on major films like Mission Impossible and delaying the opening of the new James Bond thriller No Time To Die, the COVID-19 virus is now moving on to the small screen. Starting this week, many major talk shows have decided to begin taping without a live audience, while production on scripted and reality shows have been delayed or halted completely. On Wednesday, the Vancouver-area set of Riverdale was shut down after a member of the cast or crew came into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. The producers are not specifying which member of their team was in contact or where it occurred, but said that they are shutting down the set “out of an abundance of caution,” adding that the cast or crew member is receiving medical attention. The producers also noted that they are working with the “appropriate authorities and health agencies in Vancouver” and being diligent in their efforts to notify anyone who may have come into contact with the Riverdale team.[video_embed id='1916520']RELATED: Katy & Orlando delay wedding due to coronavirus[/video_embed]Wednesday also included the news that production on the next season of Survivor has been delayed. Season 41 of Survivor was scheduled to begin filming in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji on March 24, but according to EW, host and executive producer Jeff Probst announced on March 11 in an email to crew members that production would be delayed until May. This move will also delay Season 42, which was originally scheduled to begin filming in May. The seasons are still set to premiere in September 2020 and February 2021 and air dates have not yet been affected.Daytime talk shows and late night are also being impacted by new measures to do away with large gatherings in public places. Wednesday’s episode of The View made history for being the first time the daytime talk show went live without an audience.
Late night is following suit. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers will no longer have a live audience in their New York studios starting Monday, March 16. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah will also begin airing without an audience on Monday, while Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee have already pulled their audiences.Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune have also begun taping without an audience. Conan O’Brien’s Conan is pre-taped and is currently on hiatus. The Late Late Show with James Corden and Jimmy Kimmel Live! are the only two late night shows that film in Los Angeles. Neither show has announced they will be suspending audiences, but that could change in the coming days.

The sports world has also been affected by the coronavirus. European soccer leagues have been going forward with their matches in empty stadiums that are typically filled with raucous fans. China, South Korea and Japan have suspended all pro soccer games until mid-March and beyond. The NBA announced on Wednesday that it was suspending the 2019-2020 season ‘until further notice’ after Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus.Conferences and festivals around the world are also being cancelled or going online. Austin’s annual music and film festival SXSW and Miami’s Ultra music festival were both cancelled for the first time. California music festivals Coachella and Stagecoach have both been postponed until the fall. Unlike SXSW and Ultra, which are only offering ticket holders admission to next year’s events, Coachella and Stagecoach are giving would-be attendees full refunds if they can’t make October’s rescheduled dates. For more coronavirus updates, visit CTVNews.ca.[video_embed id='1918980']RELATED: Coronavirus causes Coachella postponement[/video_embed]
