Bathing suit trends continue to change every few years, from sky-high leg cutouts in the late 1980s, to thong backs in the late 1990s (thanks Sisqo). Mid-section cut-outs had a big moment a few years ago, and retro one-piece suits continue to make a comeback, but the latest trend in swimwear has less to do with the style of the bathing suit and more with the fit. As in, it doesn’t. Welcome to the age of the underboob.

Trending on social media and popping up on the Instagram accounts of influencers, pop stars, models and actors, the underboob bikini look has even made it to the cover of fashion magazines, with model and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo showing off her underboob on the cover of Esquire Mexico in April. We’re pretty sure this look isn’t yet regulated for beauty pageants.

English pop artist Rita Ora rarely passes up the opportunity to share a sexy selfie on Instagram, with the “Your Song” singer posting an underboob pic in January while at the luxury resort Amilla Fushi in the Maldives.

Model Kristina Mendonca shared a pic with the cheeky caption “Do your Boobs hang low, Can you swing ’em to and fro” in her underboob bikini pic earlier this year.

This year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition also got in on the underboob craze, with models like Danielle Herrington wearing bikinis that were designed to show off a woman’s underboob.

While the underboob look can most easily be achieved by wearing a suit that is a few sizes too small, some brands are explicitly designing their suits to show off the bottom portion of the breast.

The trend has been around for a few years, as seen here in a 2017 GQ spread with Kylie Jenner, but now major labels are getting in on the look.
