Black students have typically represented only about one per cent of the students entering law school at the University of Toronto. However, a new program is looking to drive that number way up.The Black Future Lawyers program is a collaboration between the university's Faculty of Law, the Black Students Association and Black legal alumni. The initiative will provide resources and support to ensure law students see this as a viable profession, and one where they belong. It will also offer mentoring and shadowing opportunities with black lawyers, so students can see themselves in this career and what they can bring to the profession. In the video clip above, we sat down with Solomon McKenzie, an alumni of University of Toronto Law who is now articling at a Toronto law firm. He's been involved with the program from the start and tells us why it's so important and whether there are plans to establish the Black Future Lawyers program at other universities across Canada. For more information on the Black Future Lawyer program, visit their website.[video_embed id= '6004498076001']RELATED: New program has improved number of black students at University of Toronto's medical school [/video_embed]
