Quiz time: how do you go about pissing off a bunch of people in one single go? By inviting them to the Urban Outfitters holiday party, of course.
That’s right folks, the same company that angered the Irish with their offensive St. Patricks Day garb and set tempers ablaze with its Navajo-themed clothing is at it again. Because apparently, making light of mental illness, selling blood-splattered sweaters and plastering holocaust stars in inappropriate places didn’t quite do it.
This time the company has managed to piss off a slew of cultures all at once with the flyer to their holiday party, which calls on employees to get into the holiday spirit by wearing South Asian garb. Specifically, to “break out your juttis, kurtas, turbans, saris, lehenga cholis and harem pants…”
At this point, it’s genuinely shocking they didn’t call for some “black face” to be thrown into the mix.
The “festivities” are scheduled to get underway on Dec. 10 at their headquarters in Philadelphia. We suppose the one shining point of the invite, if we’re forced to find one, would be that the company is at least asking its employees who attend to donate mittens, gloves, hats or scarves for “operation brother love” (OH the irony!).
Somehow, we’re sure they’d accept old Ganesh quilts, shot glasses shaped like prescription pill bottles or “Eat Less” T-shirts too. After all, they don’t offer those employees a store discount for nothing.
