If you’ve been tuning into the second season of This Is Us
(Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on CTV), you’re probably pretty invested in Beth and Randall’s developing storyline. (Guys – that hair cutting scene?!) Or perhaps you are seriously worried for Kevin, now that it looks as though he’s going down a dark road paved with painkillers. (Your career will still be there, Kev!) Or maybe—just maybe—you’re tuning in for more clues about Jack’s death (okay so we’re ALL tuning in for that).

For now though, we’ve been dying to see more stuff from our favourite gal Kate as she attempts to launch her music career, figure out her relationship status with Toby and maybe mend some bridges with her mom. There’s just one problem: we can’t figure out why she’s been so moody lately.

Well Tuesday’s episode, “Still There,” finally shed some light on all of that.

Ever since Rebecca came out to L.A. and left Kevin’s taping of The Manny to see Kate in her first gig, we couldn’t help but wonder why Rebecca was getting under Kate’s skin so much. Sure, moms and daughters have weird relationships where they can constantly fight over the weirdest things, but even Toby admitted that he doesn’t know why Rebecca gets under Kate’s skin so much. That particular episode made it seem like an inherent jealousy that Kate’s always had of her mother (who, honestly, seemed pretty sweet to us even when she did perhaps push her “bug” a little hard), but maybe Kate was just dealing with something else. Something bigger. An unknown factor. Like pregnancy hormones, perhaps?

At that point, Kate probably didn’t know she was expecting, since the end of Tuesday’s episode revealed she’s only six weeks along. But as any woman who has ever been preggers knows, those hormones can come hard and fast and can turn even the sweetest of people into temporarily crazed lunatics. But even we didn’t know that Kate was pregnant until the very last moment of the episode, which featured Kate at the doctor’s office.

We loved how, up until that point, the writers made us think Kate was going to go down the unhealthy weight-loss obsession storyline we’ve seen all too often before, but as it turns out she just wants to make sure she’s being as healthy as she can be for the baby. And really, what’s wrong with that? Our real question though, is when the heck will Kate tell Toby?

Obviously he’s the dad, and he’s super concerned about Kate’s obsessive behaviour lately too. Perhaps she was just waiting for confirmation of the news, or maybe she’s just not sure how to tell him. Something tells us her own mommy issues are coming into play as well, especially considering that in the flashback scenes the eight-year-olds got chicken pox, and we got to see just how damaged Rebecca’s relationship with her own mother is. To be honest, the entire thing makes our hearts ache for reparation between Kate and Rebecca, and for that cycle of mommy-hating to stop now. But in a show with complicated relationships like This Is Us that will certainly take awhile, and sadly Rebecca will probably be the last to know.

That’s okay. Because if anything the show has also taught us that people will always try their best even when they struggle, and putting a grandbaby into the mix is as good a reason as any to keep on trying.

Until then, #KateAndToby4Eva.
