They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but these portraits could fill whole books.

Vancouver photographer Jonathan Cruz hosted the seventh annual Free Portrait Vancouver event this weekend, where residents from the downtown east-side could come in for a professional portrait. And in an area with many low-income residents, one small snapshot can go a long way.

“I think it makes them feel good, it gives them the chance to see that they mean something,” Cruz, who founded the event, said.

But it’s not just the free portrait, these folks get the full celebrity treatment. Volunteers are brought in to do their hair, makeup and make them feel fabulous before their big shoot. Basically, it’s a chance for many lower-income residents to get the pampering everyone deserves once in a while.

“It’s kind of expensive to go out and get photos done so it gives us an opportunity,” Kasha Campbell said after having her family photo taken.
