It appears Vancouver’s real estate market may have hit peak insanity.
We honestly didn’t think the city could top outlandish bidding wars that sometimes stretch millions above the asking price. Or foreign-investor fueled “shadow flipping” that is essentially pushing Vancouverites out of their own city. But you know what? They’ve outdone themselves yet again.
Introducing Million-dollar Agent and House My Style–two new reality TV show series that focus on realtors and, specifically, Chinese buyers in Vancouver’s luxury market. Their inception means the city is now officially on par with the Kardashians, Big Brothers and “real” housewives of the world–the craziest of the crazy. As nothing else seems to make for good “reality” TV these days.
Million-dollar Agent is a show that follows realtor Chris Lee as he goes around showing extremely-rich customers properties you could never afford.
“Our main focus is to show the listings, show the realtor’s life, and show the city,” Lee said.
House My Style, meanwhile, has more of a game show vibe as realtors compete through a series of challenges. Both shows are still in their infancy, with only a few episodes each.
While reality TV can definitely shine a comical light on Vancouver’s real estate phenomenon, it’s still points to a larger problem. A recent report from Simon Fraser University found skyrocketing real estate prices in the city are almost entirely the fault of foreign investment, and the Canadian government’s reluctance to limit it.
But hey, at least while we’re waiting for change to come, we have something to laugh at. You can learn more about Vancouver’s reality TV in the video above.
