If you’re a model, there’s no greater gig to book than the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Every year the televised event attracts huge international audiences, a plethora of sponsors and plenty of people with clout to turn a young model’s new career into the real deal.
That’s probably why it’s also one of the most competitive auditions around. The models, who come from a variety of countries, need to hit every single one of the casting directors and executives’ checklists in order to make the final cut — and from what we’ve seen, it’s a pretty extensive checklist at best.
Even then, just because you’ve been in the show one year doesn’t mean that you have an automatic pass the following year. Looks, fashion and models change, and each show is a fresh slate in terms of the casting process. That’s what makes it such a nerve-wracking process for the models who audition.
So now, for the first time in the show’s history, the company has released a behind-the-scenes look at that casting process with a YouTube video called “Road to the Runway: Episode 1 – Castings.” Whether that means more episodes are forthcoming as the models, execs and designers prepare for the big day remain to be seen, but given that the whole thing is shot like an upbeat, six-minute version of America’s Next Top Model, we certainly wouldn’t complain about more installments.
In the video, beautiful young women strut their stuff down a short catwalk in black panties and a bra (and crazy sky-high heels), speaking with Victoria’s Secret senior creative Ed Razek, executive producer Monica Mitro, creative director Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, and casting director John Pfeiffer.
It’s clear that the girls come from all different walks of life but their goal is the same: to impress these execs and to secure a spot in the show. Sadly, that’s not the case for all of the girls, but for those who do make the cut, watching their tears in the final moment of the video makes the entire thing worth the watch.
And it’s not just the tears — it’s the joy, the disbelief and the sheer happiness that some of these otherwise sultry models seem to be overcome with.
Because what makes your day better than seeing someone’s biggest dream come true? Not much, we’d like to think. And even though we feel a teensy bit sorry for the girls who don’t get to walk the walk this time around, we don’t feel too bad for them. After all, these are the women who go on to become Sports Illustrated models and land gigantic modelling contracts.
No wonder these finalists are called angels. Check it out for yourself in the video below:
