We all know the importance of vitamins when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet, but they can do some great things for our skin too! Beauty expert Nathalie Smith explains the benefits of vitamins commonly found in skincare and recommends some of her favourite vitamin-packed products to add to your beauty routine.

VITAMIN A for renewal:

There is no magic wand for perfect skin, but vitamin A, commonly referred to as Retinol, comes pretty close. Retinol is an effective cell communicator that essentially tells aging skin cells to behave like young rockstars, increasing cell turnover and stimulating collagen. With regular use, it mops up wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and turns back the hands of time.

  • This serum works its age-fighting magic while you sleep. It’ll satisfy your need for instant gratification with naturally derived alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliate and renew all through the night, producing an overnight glow. But the encapsulated time release retinol makes you wait for it, ultimately producing visibly firmer, plumper, smoother looking skin.

VITAMIN B3 for oil and pore control:

You cannot permanently erase your pores, but the situation is not totally hopeless. Vitamin B3, also known as Niacinamide, could be your new skincare BFF because it can dramatically reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and oily skin.

PRODUCT TO TRY:
  • This is a fabulous brand that offers high results at a low price point. Here’s how it works: Pores secrete oil and sebum, helping form the skin's healthy natural barrier, but an excess will clog pores, enlarge them, and once exposed to air, oxidize, forming a blackhead. Niacinamide helps form the skin’s natural barrier by increasing production of one of the most important lipids in that defense squad – ceramide – resulting in stronger skin and less moisture loss. When your skin retains its own natural moisture, excessive oil flow becomes controlled.

VITAMIN C for brightening:

If you’re convinced pigmentation and uneven skin tone have a personal vendetta against you and your complexion, then Vitamin C has your back. Vitamin C is a potent brightening ingredient and antioxidant that helps prevent aging and oxidation caused by environmental factors and UV damage.

  • This is a pearl lavender cream made with Japanese “beautyberry” – a glossy purple superfruit with the power to stabilize and maximize the effect of not one but two types of Vitamin C. The first type is water-soluble Vitamin C that absorbs quickly for an immediate luminous glow. The second an oil-soluble Vitamin C that remains in skin longer and goes to work on an uneven skin tone left behind from sun-filled summer days. Plus, this brand is a favorite of Meghan Markle, and since she’s a perennially fresh-faced beauty who has transitioned from regular human to super royal, her skincare advice is definitely trustworthy.

VITAMIN D for soothing irritated skin:

Vitamin D supports lackluster skin, vibrancy, spots and boosts elasticity with anti-inflammatory effects.
PRODUCT TO TRY:

  • How do you resurrect dehydrated, flaky, bumpy, keratitis skin?  The best contender I’ve found to quench dry knees, arms and elbows after a long dark winter is actually a renewing lotion spiked with what’s known as the “sunshine vitamin”. Developed by dermatologists, this body cream contains a hybrid cocktail mix of exfoliant salicylic acid (that’s what the SA stands for) to remove dead skin cells and antioxidant Vitamin D. Many dermatologists are championing Vitamin D2 as it has an anti-inflammatory effect on skin, evening texture and tone. So you’ll be ready for the arrival of warmer weather!

VITAMIN E for moisturizing:

When it comes to beauty benefits, Vitamin E is the all-star of the nutrient world and can be found in a plethora of products. In addition to moisturizing, Vitamin E protects skin from damage directly caused by UV rays and free radicals. Your lips are often exposed to the sun and don't contain the protective pigment melanin, so choosing a lip care product with Vitamin E protects your lips during the day and even repairs damage after the day is done.

  • This one maintains soft lips without adding a lot of shine with SPF 25! Fun fact: Bruce Grayson the head makeup artist at the Oscars a.k.a. The Beauty Super Bowl, keeps a stash of these balms backstage to use on presenters before their big moment. It’s the show’s secret weapon!

ZINC for blemish control:

Zinc is like a 24-hour, on-call skin mechanic that helps repair and heal damaged tissue, making it especially effective at treating blemishes by decreasing inflammation and soothing redness.

  • Simple skincare is the best and this product only contains THREE ingredients: water, Sodium Chloride and Zinc Sulphate. When problems start to pop up and you need to heal your skin, this is your spontaneous Zinc spritz for spots. Because it’s a liquid, it readily penetrates the skin, and it requires no planning. You can use this whenever you feel like it – before makeup as a toner; during the day; and in your night-time routine to help reveal a clearer, calmer complexion. Serozinc was once upon a time only available in French pharmacies, but now that it’s gone viral, you can find it at most drugstores. It’s just that good.

MULTIVITAMINS for maximum results:

When you want multiple benefits that require minimal effort, I turn to multivitamin skincare formulations.

  • Packed with high amounts of Vitamins B2, D, A, E and K along with anti-irritating and soothing properties – avocado is skin food!
  • Each of these packets contains a single pair of coated gloves that will intensely nourish and treat your hands as you continue to do what you're doing like using your smartphone or your computer. You simply peel the paper film off the tab, fold around the wrist, and press to seal shut like Velcro for no drip and no mess. Leave on for 15 minutes and then gently massage any excess product into skin – no need to rinse.
