When it comes to runway shows, fashion’s creative geniuses usually stay behind the scenes. After the final model finishes flaunting her stuff on the catwalk, closing the show, said designer will make a brief appearance on stage, giving the audience a quick wave or a bow or an air kiss.
That’ how it usually goes, but not at the recent Vivienne Westwood show. Nope, this boundary-pushing artist dressed herself in looks from her Fall 2017 line and strutted her stuff just like the rest of the models cast.
The show, which took place at the Intercontinental Hotel’s gilded ballroom in Paris, was an array of avant garde ensembles. It was quirky and weird with models dressed in Westwood’s iconic punk infused fashions walking a circle in the middle of the room rather than a traditional straight out-and-back runway — perfectly Vivienne Westwood.
It was an event full of surprises, from models wearing what appeared to be trash fixed into their hair to a guest appearance by a puppy. But the evening’s most standout moments were when the mother of the brand, Vivienne Westwood herself walked out mid show wearing her some of her styles.
Why can’t more designers be like her? This is the kind of creativity and flare we love to see in the fashion industry.
Westwood walked twice, once in a high waisted navy and red pinstriped skirt with a super oversized coat, and again in a black baggy wrap dress with gold embellishments and muted green knee-high stockings.
She recently changed the line’s designation from Gold Label to Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood as a way to show appreciation for her hubby and design partner’s contributions to her work.
At the end of the show, Westwood walked hand in hand with her partner in crime Kronthaler. Is it weird that we kind of wish Westwood was our grandmother? At the very least, we’re going to start calling her our fashion grandmother.
