For every lovely story we hear about Duchess Meghan, it seems we get three stories about her not-so-lovely father, Thomas Markle. If he had any sense of self-control, we wouldn’t have heard a peep from him after he bailed on his daughter mere days before the royal wedding but, instead, we’ve been faced with a barrage of interviews, ranging from royal-secret-spilling to demands to see his daughter. The Royals have been pretty tight-lipped about the whole thing, but with him doing a full-scale attack on not only Meghan but the rest of the British Royal Family, someone on the other side is finally talking.

While no official statement has been a made, a source close to the Duchess told the Daily Mail that Markle was never ill and faked an emergency operation as an excuse to not attend the wedding and gain some sympathy at the same time.

“He had to come up with a good enough reason not to attend her wedding and avoid any further embarrassment after those staged photos went public,” said the insider.

Ahh, those staged photos. That’s when it all began — the bad stuff with Thomas, at least. If you recall, upon learning about Harry and Meghan’s relationship, people wanted to know more about Meghan, understandably so. And what was reported about her dad was that Thomas Markle was a very private man, a recluse, who moved to Mexico to live a quiet life. The only time we heard from him was when he and Meghan’s mother, the lovely, classy, quiet Doria Ragland, issued a joint statement through the palace when Harry and Meghan’s engagement was announced.

But then the paparazzi found him and we couldn’t help but feel sorry for him because while we loved Harry and Megs, Thomas didn’t ask for the intrusion. If we’re being honest, if the royal family had handled it better back then, maybe helped him out, gave him tips, protection, even, perhaps we wouldn’t be in this mess. Yet here we are.

Still, though, everything was going OK. The couple were making more appearances together while planning their wedding at the same time. Sure, Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha, went public with all kinds of garbage but, for the most part, things weren’t terrible in the lead-up to the wedding. Fast-forward to the weekend before, when Thomas was outed for conspiring with a paparazzo. It was a brutal move, and it was orchestrated by none other than Samantha.

Thomas backed out of the wedding entirely, claiming he didn’t want to embarrass his daughter or the royal family any further. That’s when talk of him suffering a heart attack came into play. He then had a change of heart, and decided that if the doctors would let him fly to London, he would be there to walk Meghan down the aisle. But then he bailed yet again, despite Meghan’s pleas, and claimed he had to have surgery. The timing was questionable, at best; bull, at worst. For Megs, however, it was simply terrible — who’s going to walk you down the aisle is the last thing any bride wants to deal with during an already stressful time.

The DailyMail.com reached out to the hospital Markle claimed to be having his procedure at “for confirmation of his May 16th visit,” but the clinic replied that “no such name” had ever checked into the hospital. And before you question whether or not that kind of information can be divulged, in the U.S. it can; a hospital can say if a patient is admitted, just not what for or the medical condition.

“The poor health story was his way of generating some compassion from the public, and taking the attention off those staged photos which were a complete embarrassment to Meghan and the royal family,” the source close to Meghan shared. “Of course Meghan is upset with him. Her father missed her wedding. He missed walking her down the aisle all because of that ill-conceived publicity stunt. It was really just such poor judgment on his part.”

The source added: “Now everyone’s feeling sorry for him. They shouldn’t. He brought this upon himself and if he were truly sick Meghan would have made an effort to visit him. Don’t feel sorry for him. If anything, feel sorry for Meghan.”

Should we feel sorry for him? Maybe. But he’s not doing poor Meghan — his daughter — any favours by dropping bombshell after bombshell in interview after interview. Plus she seems to be getting it from the whole Markle family. After Tom’s latest interview, Samantha took to Twitter to call the BRF “cold” and attacked Meghan, tweeting, “How about you pay tribute to your own father?! Enough is enough. Act like a humanitarian, act like a woman,” adding, “If our father dies, it’s on you Meg.”

Harsh words from your own flesh and blood (or from anyone, really). At the very least, while Meg’s American family seems incapable of going more than a few days without some attempt to publicly shame her, her new British one seems to be accepting her for who she is (you know, as long as she’s not wearing wedges).

Waaait a minute, did Thomas Markle fake his heart attack?
