Watch Adam Driver be the chillest dude in Hollywood on SNL

He's so chill. So approachable. So good at smiling.

Adam Driver strikes an imposing figure: he’s tall, dark, handsome and is decidedly not the sunshine-and-smiles type. No wonder he blew us all away as Kylo Ren in the last three Star Wars movies (Big Badguy Energy there). (And then there was the small incident in December where he walked out of an NPR live interview because he was uncomfortable listening to a playback clip of his own acting in Marriage Story.) But he is on a mission to let us know that he is super chillllll, maaaaan. To prove it, he spent a good five minutes during his SNL opening monologue on Saturday showing us that he’s the chilliest chill-man who ever chilled.“People assume I’m just like the characters I play,” he explained to a packed Studio 8H. “That I’m a really serious, private, intimidating guy. Adam from Girls, or Kylo Ren from, uh... the space one. I’m not an intense guy, I’m actually very chill!” Calling to the SNL band, he asked for some chill music, but very quickly vetoed their first choice, then nixed the second in favour of the first again. Uh huh. Exactly what chill people do all the time. The man just earned an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category for his role in Marriage Story, so we are going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he can act any which way he likes. Except on the red carpet. Apparently that's locked in as "terrified kidnapping victim."“People think I hate red carpet stuff. And I do. But it’s just because I’m bad at smiling.” Adam explained. “I look like a kidnapped person trying to send a message with my eyes. Look!” Wow, he really does look like that.He then approached an audience member in the front row, gifting him with a signed mint-in-package Kylo Ren action figure, adding menacingly, “If I find that on eBay, I’ll kill you.” He’s a former marine, so it feels legit. In all seriousness, Adam might be intimidating, but he's also just a person. In particular, walking out of the NPR interview at the end of last year was interpreted by some as diva-like behaviour—not chill—but a lot of fans pointed out Adam has openly spoken about how he's uncomfortable seeing himself act so it was more likely about self-care. Hey, even towering Hollywood actors have their anxieties and we can totally respect a person taking care of their own mental health.Luckily, as the show moved on to sketches, the mysterious-yet-lovely leading man, reminded us of his comedy chops. He performed a bittersweet love story in a giant ketchup bottle with Cecily Strong who was *gasp* catsup and reprised his turn as Kylo Ren on Undercover Boss (which didn't exactly contribute to that ~cool~ image he was totally cultivating before). The man can do comedy, tragedy, drama and almost anything else—who cares if "chill" just isn't in his range?[video_embed id='1812285']RELATED: Adam Driver hates watching himself on screen[/video_embed]
