Emma Stone is literally putting hard work and sweat into helping others during the ongoing global pandemic. The Oscar-winning actor recently participated in a dance-a-thon to help raise money and awareness for the charity Child Mind Institute. Dancing and lip-synching to the soundtrack from Grease as well as more current dance hits, Stone went full Sandra Dee with a black leather jacket and hairbrush microphone. Tell us about it, Emma.Stone teamed up with choreographer Ryan Heffington for the #SweatFest event, taking over the Instagram for @ChildMindInstitute on Saturday. The La La Land actor is a board member for the independent nonprofit, which is “dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders.” Following her dance-off with Heffington, Stone spoke about the amazing work being done by the New York-based organization, which has begun providing telehealth resources for free during the Coronavirus pandemic.
“They need our support right now,” said Stone, who filmed her video in front of a wall decorated with the names of dance moves created by Heffington. Speaking to the celebrity dance instructor, who has been providing online classes, Stone said “You’re helping people take care of their mental health as well as their physical health. While we’re all taking care of our physical health and staying at home and trying to support essential workers, sometimes we need a little extra support with mental health and one in five kids have a mental health disorder, so it’s a very important time.”Stone has been a mental health advocate for years, speaking publicly and candidly about her own struggles. The actor first opened up about her own experiences back in 2011, telling Glamour magazine "I had massive anxiety as a child. I was in therapy. From eight to 10, I was borderline agoraphobic. I could not leave my mom's side. I don't really have panic attacks anymore, but I had really bad anxiety." In 2018, Stone spoke with Child Mind Institute president Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz about the benefits she has experienced from her therapy for panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. “The world is hard and scary and there’s a lot that goes on and when you’re really sensitive and attuned to a lot of that, it can be crippling,” said Stone. “But if you don’t let it cripple you and you use it for something positive or productive, it’s like a superpower.”A longtime student of Heffington’s, Stone is not the choreographer's only famous student. Heffington first gained a following by teaching accessible dance classes in Los Angeles and eventually caught the eye of Sia, which led to him choreographing her 2014 video for “Chandelier.” Working with several notable artists since then, Heffington’s latest gig has been choreographing Lin Manuel Miranda’s upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical Tick, Tick…BOOM!.Heffington has also been keeping celebrities moving during quarantine. On April 15, Pink joined Heffington’s daily #SweatFest. During an Instagram live conversation on April 7, Reese Witherspoon told Jennifer Lopez that she’s been working out during quarantine with her kids by following Heffington’s online dance classes. Fun fact, Heffington was one of the dancers during the ‘bend and snap’ scene in Legally Blonde. As Elle Woods would say, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy!”
