It was long predicted that J.K. Simmons was going to win the Oscar for his supporting role in Whiplash, so no one was exactly clutching their pearls when Lupita Nyong’o called his name to pick up his Actor, er statue.

Beating out Robert Duvall, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo, Simmons opened his speech by acknowledging his wife and the mother of their kids, Michelle Schumacher, before moving on to his “above-average children,” then seriously describing them as “extraordinary human beings” and “a reflection of your mother.”

He then took a special moment to praise all parents out there, suggesting, “If I may, call your mom. If you’re lucky enough to have parents or two alive on this planet… Don’t text, don’t email. Call them on the phone, tell them you love them. Talk to them for as long as they want to hear you. Thank you, Mom and Dad.”

Tear.

He did, however, forget to thank someone… though he rectified that shortly after. Whatever. J.K. still rocks.
