American Idol (watch full episodes on CTV.ca) has always been home to some spectacular staged performances—lights, costumes, pyrotechnics, and the works. But with COVID-19 keeping everybody at home, the contestants have had to find other ways to still dazzle without, singing their hearts out in their bedrooms and on their balconies while the glitz and glamour takes a backseat. They all looked and sounded great and then Katy Perry took the mic.If you thought Katy would take this lying down, y’all don’t know Katy. The "Fireworks" singer decided to give viewers a feast for the eyes with an almost entirely green-screen-CGI set and perfect lighting, which she somehow executed in her own home. We say this with the utmost seriousness: we are
shook.
The
Idol judge and
mom-to-be dropped her new single and music video for "
Daisies" recently so of course her first TV performance of the new pop earworm had to be on the
American Idol season three finale. Armed with “technology that’s never been seen
before on TV,” she launched into the trippiest performance you've likely even witnessed from someone’s living room. Dressed in nothing but a frilled fuchsia dress, the CGI visuals morphed from the
Idol stage to rooms of a home to Katy flying through a daisy explosion. Normally green screen visuals operate behind someone, but somehow these were able to move in front of Katy, swirl all around her, and then seamlessly wipe. We've seen Super Bowl performances that were less elaborate!Talk about taking the song lyric, "Took them sticks and stones, showed ‘em I could build a house," literally. On
Twitter, Katy explained that the song was written "as a call to remain true to the course you’ve set for yourself, regardless of what others may think. Recently, it has taken a new meaning for me, in light of what the whole world is experiencing." Seems she's tapped into not only what peopole want to hear, but the kind of at-home creativity that viewers are hungry for.[video_embed id='1959790']RELATED: Katy Perry shows off baby bump in 'Daisies' [/video_embed]That message also rang true with Katy’s Insta post congratulating just-announced
Idol season three winner, Just Sam. Sharing a
clip montage of the winning performer over the course of the season, where she blossomed from a timid singer into someone with drive and purpose behind her voice, Katy’s caption read, “I told [Just Sam] to sing to where she wanted to go, and looks like she sang it into existence!”Katy’s iconic "Daisies" performance comes just a bit over a week since her emotional rendition of "
Baby Mine" from
Dumbo during the Disney Family Singalong, which was also filmed and performed from her home.Watch full episodes of
