It’s easy to get excited about the original cast of Hamilton getting together again, but when they’re reunited to tell goofy and funny behind-the-scenes stories from the mega-Broadway hit, that’s something to get extra psyched about. Hamilton super-fan Kelly Clarkson nearly blew her top when she interviewed via video-chat Lin-Manuel Miranda (Alexander Hamilton), Leslie Odom Jr (Aaron Burr), Okieriete "Oak" Onaodowan (Hercules Mulligan/James Madison), Renee Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler) and the rest of the 1776 gang for The Kelly Clarkson Show this week.In an attempt to get as much juicy info as possible to tide fans over until the full Hamilton show starring the original cast drops on Disney+ July 3, Kelly had a game planned where Lin-Manuel had to call out his fellow thespians for their hijinks. After hearing everything we missed backstage, we're going to need several featurettes on these backstage antics.
You may have heard tales of wild dance parties happening backstage and in the wings while Lin-Manuel was performing, but as he tells it, he never actually got to witness much of it. “There’s whole sections of the backstage traffic that I never saw because I was onstage, but I would look over and be like, ‘What’s happening stage right?’ and they’d be like…” Lin-Manuel imitated his cast mates—waving his hands in the air like he just don't care.Turns out the biggest culprits for getting the party started were Goldsberry and Onaodowan, “And Leslie hosted the dance party!” Miranda added. As Leslie explained, these epic raves (with special speakers no less) would happen one intermission a week and Lin-Manuel cut in with the additional anecdote of castmate Daveed Diggs (Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson) taking the Grammy they won for Best Musical Theatre Album in 2016 and taking shots right out of the gold gramophone. While we don't normally get to see all those backstage moments, Renee and her Schuyler Sisters (Phillipa Soo and Jasmine Cephas Jones) have been sharing videos all week of some of the shenanigans we missed. Footage of the three harmonizing and cracking up in their dressing rooms, impersonating everyone asking them for tickets to the show and fake freaking out backstage has been getting fans pumped for the #Hamilfilm.[video_embed id='1986245']RELATED: Beyoncé drops 'Black Is King' trailer [/video_embed]Lin-Manuel also revealed that Oak has a very-specific celebrity impersonation that the entire cast cannot get enough of.“I can tell you,” Lin-Manuel said, “that we did two separate #ham4hams where Oak sang as Minnie Mouse.”Turns out it was actually Oak impersonating Mickey Mouse impersonating Idina Menzel (take all the time you need to wrap your head around that one), and Oak made his rendition for Kelly Clarkson even more dramatic by sliding out of the Zoom conference call to sing the Hamilton hit “Helpless” in this strange Mickey-Idina mashup. It's exactly what you would expect it to be.Possibly the most heartwarming moment of the cast appearance came when Leslie, who won a Tony for his portrayal of Aaron Burr, proved he was still able to rap his very first line from the musical, even though he exited the show in 2016. Something tells us all the lyrics of Hamilton will be in the cast's DNA for many years to come.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Man hears 'I love you' for first time in 25-years after ear implant [/video_embed]
