Miley Cyrus usually sells out massive concert arenas in seconds, so when she performed during the Global Goal: Unite for Our Future concert hosted by Global Citizen this weekend, at first glance it might have seemed jarring to see her perform to a wash of empty seats and a bone-dry stadium. Luckily, despite appearances, there were at-home viewers who were loving her raucous and soulful rendition of The Beatles’ classic tune, “Help.”Inside the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, Miley turned "Help" into an upbeat country romp. Decked out on a teal Alexandre Vauthier dress with massive leg and midriff slits which she told Vogue was meant to inspire hope and channel glam rock, her performance plinth was literally the word "HELP!" and she made the dot at the bottom of the exclamation point her centre-stage. Despite the lyrics, we don’t think Miley needs much help in this performance. She’s got this superstar thing down.“I dedicated this performance to everyone who is working tirelessly for testing, treatments and vaccines so all of us can come together in places like this empty stadium.... I can’t wait to be together again ?” she wrote on Twitter, explaining that her isolated performance in the empty stadium is a metaphor for how, despite our physical-distancing and self-isolation requirements, music can still bring us together.[video_embed id='-1']Miley Cyrus performs The Beatles' 'Help!' at 'Global Goal: Unite for Our Future' [/video_embed]“For me, the magic of performing is sharing and celebrating music together...being surrounded by people and feeling their energy! During this time of COVID-19, we are coming together in a different way...we are uniting with the goal of ensuring EVERYONE has access to the solutions to end this pandemic.”The ‘Global Goal: Unite for Our Future’ concert on Saturday, June 27 was hosted by Dwayne Johnson and its goal was to shed a light on communities disproportionately affected by the coronavirus pandemic with the help of a few stars, including Jennifer Hudson, Justin Bieber, Usher, Shakira, and the cast of the Broadway hit Hamilton.

JHud's Opening Ballad

Jennifer Hudson opened the concert with the words: "The power of unity creates change, so let's keep coming together to create that change. Good change," before launching into "Where Peaceful Waters Flow." She delivered a soulful, mindblowing performance all while floating down the Chicago Riverwalk. TBH, we would pay good money to have JHud read us the phonebook.[video_embed id='-1']Jennifer Hudson performs 'Where Peaceful Waters Flow' at 'Global Goal: Unite for Our Future' [/video_embed]

The Biebs feat. (and six-feet-from) Quavo

The Biebs was joined by Quavo for a piano-ballad performance of his hit song "Intentions," with both musicians in isolation, and filmed in a solemn, sombre black and white motif. On Twitter, Bieber gave a shoutout to another fellow Canadian Justin, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for his involvement in Global Citizen. “I’m a proud Canadian,” JB wrote as he retweeted PM Trudeau’s speech.[video_embed id='-1'] Justin Bieber and Quavo perform 'Intentions' at 'Global Goal: Unite for Our Future' [/video_embed]

Usher's Charity Single

Usher’s performance was also the first time he sang his new song "I Cry," which is a downtempo reflective anthem for those who have lost loved ones. He also announced that he is donating his proceeds from the track to LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation) in support of black-owned small businesses and community organizations.[video_embed id='-1']Usher performs 'I CRY' at 'Global Goal: Unite for Our Future' [/video_embed]

Shakira's International Reminder

Shakira prefaced her performance of "Sale el Sol" by reminding viewers of the gravity of the coronavirus situation in South America (Shakira is from Colombia) and the potential is has to devastate the continent of Africa. “Latin America's now the hardest-hit region of this pandemic and experts say Africa will be next. We need to make sure that everyone has food security and access to health care in these places or it will make distributing a vaccine that much harder. We must do everything we can to help them avoid catastrophic damage. Thousands of lives could be endangered by the virus itself and other life-threatening effects of poverty such as hunger,” she said. She also explained that the lovelorn ballad was about “the moment you start to see the sun break through after hard times.”[video_embed id='-1']Shakira performs 'Sale el Sol' at 'Global Goal: Unite for Our Future' [/video_embed]

A hyped-up Hamilton Preview

During the “before times," Jimmy Fallon loved bringing musicians on The Tonight Show to perform their hit songs with house band The Roots using only classroom instruments. Since his show moved to an at-home format, he has had to find creative ways to do it in isolation (thank you Zoom conference calls!). For the Global Citizen concert, he enlisted the help of Lin-Manuel Miranda and the original Broadway cast of Hamilton to perform "Helpless" using whatever instruments they could find lying about their homes. “The musical Hamilton is a story about hope, revolution, and love,” Jimmy said in the intro, “a story as relevant now as it was back then.”[video_embed id='-1']The OG 'Hamilton' cast, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots perform 'Helpless' at 'Global Goal: Unite for Our Future' [/video_embed]Watch Global Goal: Unite for Our Future on CTV.ca and the CTV app.
