Sometimes you just gotta let it all out. That’s one of the many messages married couple Dave Leduc and Irina Terehova are sharing when they approach the starting line of The Amazing Race Canada this season.
The Montrealers have a unique “meet cute:” He’s a professional Burmese Bareknuckle boxer (currently ranked as the world champ in Lethwei), and she met him as a journalist after she wrote a story about his career. They kept in touch until one day he dared her to come to Thailand where he was fighting… so she did, and she never left. “I stayed with him, I left my job, all my friends, my family, and I stayed in Thailand,” she says. “I’ve gotten used to living out of a suitcase.”
They’ve travelled the world
Eventually the pair—who now live in Dubai—got married, and they’ve been all over the world travelling since then. The one place they haven’t travelled though is Canada, which was a big part of why they wanted to audition for The Amazing Race Canada: it’s a show known for travelling around the country.
“That’s the reason, that’s what we’re most excited about,” Leduc says. “We did like, 20 countries earlier this year for a seminar tour that taught martial arts around the world… but we never get the chance to visit our own country. We’re excited to visit provinces we’ve never been to and just to have that chance.”
The duo says their strong travelling background and the fact that they’re used to doing it together could make them front-runners in terms of the race. But they think it’s their pure passion that will have viewers rooting for them.
They’re going to keep it real
“We want people to remember us as the couple that sticks together and goes through thick and thin,” Leduc says. “Maybe the team that just keeps it real, I guess. We’re not going to sugar coat it, and we will show it as it is. We’ve very passionate people, and if you’re very passionate you’re going to love hard and you’re going to fight hard too. We don’t believe in keeping it in. So I’ve had chairs thrown at me… water bottles… I’ve had a lot of stuff thrown at me.”
“We’ve seen other couples on the show and they don’t really fight. Either they don’t show their true colours, or maybe they’re just not really passionate?” Terehova adds. “It gets really intense in our house… It’s going to be interesting to see what I’m like when things are not going my way.”
“You can only know someone when you travel with them because it makes their true colours pop,” Leduc adds. “Well I know her true colours and she knows my true colours and we’re going to keep it real.”
We can’t wait.
