Hey ladies, let us know if you’ve heard this one:
No, it’s not a joke. We’re just wondering if you’ve heard it.
If you’ve ever walked down the street (and you’re a lady) chances are you’ve been catcalled. Anything from “Nice hair!” to “Nice …,” well, they get into that in the video. It’s an enduring phenomenon that has, thankfully, been getting a lot of attention in the media lately. From this Hollaback video to this epic Daily Show sketch, catcalling is hitting the public eye.
This latest video from Cosmopolitan gives us — and more specifically three perturbed boyfriends — a look at what women go through on a daily basis. Olivia, Tessa and Amy are filmed by hidden cameras as they walk down the street. Afterwards, boyfriends Seth, Jon and Miguel are shown the footage. And what they see isn’t pretty. From ‘compliments’ about her breasts to a suggestion that she work in a strip club to outright name calling, each woman has to deal with unwanted attention that can escalate to downright scary in a very short period of time.
Watching the men go from slightly incredulous to increasingly angry (video contains bleeped out cursing, BTW) is oddly cathartic, for the women and for us the viewers. And whether their responses are exactly what we’d like to hear (It’s not reeeally the point that, “some of these women are somebody’s daughter, sister, mother,” they are, in fact, people in their own right) it is definitely another step towards understanding. And that’s a step in the right direction.
