We know you like getting your full seven hours of beauty sleep (so you can function like a regular person in the daytime), but there’s a reason you should stay up a little later than usual tonight. James Corden‘s bringing his much-loved Carpool Karaoke to our TV screens and we honestly can’t wait.
Corden has a primetime special airing on March 29 (at 10 p.m. ET on CTV Two), in addition to his regular Late Late Show timeslot. There’ll be a big opening number, highlights from past segments, James’ favourite moments from his first year as host, all leading up to an all-new Carpool Karaoke featuring the likes of, oh, we don’t know, a little-known singer, dancer, actor and American Idol judge, Jennifer Lopez. That’s right, J.Lo’s in the house. Or car. Or SUV. You catch our drift.
We’re dying to hear James harmonize with Jenny as they sing classics like “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” “Waiting for Tonight” or “Jenny From the Block,” to newer stuff like “On the Floor” and “Booty.” Oh, please, please, pretty please, sing “Booty.”
But because we can’t wait, we figured we’d look back at all his Carpool Karaokes (because any excuse to watch James) and rank them. So from good to great, here are all James’ star-studded singing sessions, some of which he sings better than his passengers:
15. IGGY AZALEA
She’s a so-so rapper and now we know why she doesn’t sing. Getting Iggs to try on wedding dresses was adorable, and if James does end up officiating Izzy’s wedding to Nick Young, that might bump her up.
14. CARRIE UNDERWOOD
The singing came second to Carrie taking James on a shopping spree, as they searched for cowboy boots, a hat and a leather vest.
13. MARIAH CAREY
She was the first-ever Carpool Karaoke passenger, but let’s be serious; Mimi couldn’t get anyone from Point A to Point B. The diva initially protests, “I’m not singing today!” but then immediately dives into the doo-doos of “Always Be My Baby.” Perfection.
12. ROD STEWART AND A$AP ROCKY
The rock classics are spectacular but an A$AP Rocky guest appearance from the back seat makes it that much better.
11. JENNIFER HUDSON
Going through a drive-thru ordering a cheeseburger, fries and a Diet Coke, then taking a pic on J-Hud’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as they ad-libbed and tried to out-croon each other … we couldn’t get enough.
10. JASON DERULO
Hearing Derulo sing opera, then teaching James some moves in a parking lot was Gucci. So. Gucci.
9. CHRIS MARTIN
Before this, you may have thought Chris Martin was a robot because until his journey to the Super Bowl with Corden, you’ve never seen him smile this much in your life.
8. JUSTIN BIEBER, VOL. 1
The first of three, this took place long before his mega-hit comeback album Purpose was released. But watching JB do a Rubik’s Cube was kind of mind-blowing.
This gal is quirky and hilarious AND she can sing. Like, SING. And who better to make someone more comfortable than James?
6. ONE DIRECTION
They almost never dance, but James got them to wear matching shirts and break it down. Yes to this, yes to all this.
5. ELTON JOHN
Elton and James donned funky glasses and feather boas and tackled hits like “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Crocodile Rock” and the theme from The Lion King. More, please.
4. STEVIE WONDER
It starts off funny but when Stevie calls James’ wife and serenades her with a rendition of “I Just Called To Say I Love You,” Corden was left misty-eyed, as were we.
3. JUSTIN BIEBER, VOL. 2
Bieber’s Carpool Karaoke was so nice, he did it twice. There was some new Biebs, (you’ll never sing along to “Sorry” without doing “big box, little box, cardboard box” with it) a classic, and even some Kanye. But, it was their clothes swap and the revelation that Bieber’s shower song is Alanis Morissette‘s “Ironic” makes it the best. Well, almost.
2. JUSTIN BIEBER, VOL. 3
And here’s the Biebz, back at it again with his back-to-back hits (as his bud Drake would say). This post-Grammys drive is just, how you say, magnifique. Their witty playful banter, matching outfits (honestly so polished and so cute) and synchronized dance moves made us swoon and put J-Biebz back in our good books for good.
James and Adele driving along the streets of London, being their awesome selves and singing the HELL out of Adele’s songs takes the top spot. It’s clear that people agree with us as it holds the YouTube record for the most watched late night clip with 84 million views and counting.
Hmm, wonder where J.Lo will fall?
The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special airs Tuesday, March 29 at 10 p.m. ET on CTV Two.
