It’s hard not to be obsessed with cake. It’s pretty, it’s delicious and it usually signifies a special occasion. So when people mess with it, we have some very mixed feelings to sort out.

Take the latest trend from Japan: meat cakes. No, we’re not talking about cute meatloaf cakes or cupcakes with pretty, piped potato icing; we’re talking about actual cake creations using real slabs of meat. And fish. And chicken. And who knows what else?

Basically, people are taking the slabs of meat and creating tiers to look like actual birthday cakes — complete with a candle or two. Some of them, like the sushi and cold cut variety are actually kind of cool. You can imagine an entire party digging in over dinner and then just skipping dessert. Others though, like those involving slabs of uncooked bacon or steak, are just confusing. We sincerely hope people are grilling these things before consuming them. Because you know… food safety.

Maybe this is just a new way to enjoy steak tartare?

Because they certainly are pretty, if nothing else.

Especially when they’re topped with flowers and other decorations.
