From the female Democratic delegates wearing white in support of the suffragettes, to Nancy Pelosi’s meme-able clap, to the First Lady’s fashion choices, there were a lot of take-aways from this week’s State of the Union address and none of them had to do with President Trump’s speech. We just muted that part. As for his better half, viewers were confused when Melania Trump opted for the one-glove look. Same.

Is this a thing, now? Melania has made questionable fashion choices in the past (naked pants, anyone?) and this one is just as confusing. People online had theories about the inspiration for Melania’s look, including Luke Skywalker…

…and Michael Jackson

…and for the real sci-fi fans, Dr. Strangelove.

It appears that Melania may have just been slow to remove both gloves, but again, we’re confused. This isn’t her first SOTU. She knows she needs to walk down the stairs, smile, and wave. Did she think this year wasn’t going to be televised? Maybe she was just hoping that was the case. We could all do with a lot less Donald Trump on TV.

The State of the Union Glovegate is the latest instance of the FLOTUS being photographed indoors with only one glove on. Maybe she has poor circulation, or is scared of germs (it is flu season), or is partial to nail polish chipping right before a big event.

There were those who saw the one-glove look as a sign of respect. It just seems odd that with a team of people whose job it is to make sure the First Family is always dressed according to tradition, that no one would either hold her gloves or remind her to remove both.

Then again, this is the same team of people who thought it was fine for the First Lady to be photographed in the infamous “I Don’t Care, Do U?” jacket while visiting a centre for families who had been separated at the border thanks to her husband’s inhumane ruling. And while the State of the Union seems like an ideal place to make a statement about the strength of the US, Trump’s stylist Hervé Pierre doesn’t give much thought to how he’s dressing the First Lady, aside from what looks good. Speaking with Yahoo, Pierre said he didn’t make the connection between Trump wearing a navy Burberry trench to the SOTU and Brexit.

“As long as I find the right outfit, the designer is almost irrelevant. The designer, well, is Burberry, but it could have been anybody else. It has nothing to do with England or Brexit. If I would have to think of all these things when I look at dresses and outfits, I would lose my mind,” said Pierre. “Afterward, social media will go on about Brexit or whatever. They have to do their own version of this. On my side, believe me I don’t think of it. Because I don’t have time to do that.”

The moral of the story is, take your expectations of Melania Trump’s fashion choices, lower them, and then completely throw them out the window.
