Whether it was a drunk night, a date-night, a family night or a lonely night where you cried into a pizza, Canadians ordered in a lot of food this year.
How do we know? Well, we talked to JUST EAT, a company that partners with restaurants to deliver across Canada, and they revealed some pretty telling trends of the past year. We’ll cut to the chase: you ate a lot of carbs. Here are 10 facts about Canadian eating behaviours from 2014:
Quebec City loves Pho
Of all the cuisines, Quebec City ordered Vietnamese food the most. Huh.
Canada’s Battle for Pizza Supremacy was Weak
Western Canada ordered six times more pizza than Eastern Canada. Good job, Manitoba!
The restaurant people ordered from the most is…
Noka Japanese Cuisine in Toronto. It received more takeout orders than any other restaurant in all of Canada.
Vancouver: Canada’s Japan
Continuing in the theme of sushi and sushi-adjacent foods, hungry residents of Vancouver ordered Japanese food over 23,000 times.
More pizza news
JUST EAT delivered over 180,000 pizzas throughout Canada. Wow-za.
Montreal smoked meat
Quebec is the only province where “deli food” made the top 10 favourite types of food, and that probably has something to do with Celine Dion and her husband becoming owners of famed delicatessen, Schwartz’s. (Well, and Montreal smoked meat is delicious, of course.)
We could’ve cooked more
Throughout all of Canada, JUST EAT delivered over 2500 tonnes of takeout (which weighs about as much as 1,666 Volkswagen Beetles). Seriously, that’s a lot of people not cooking with some frequency.
Tacos, Tacos, Tacos
Toronto ordered more Mexican food than any other city in Canada.
London, Ontario likes dessert
Londoners do not like to bake, apparently. It’s the only city in Canada where desserts made the top 10 favourite types of food.
Million Dollar Meals
Toronto spent over $20 million dollars on takeout, more than any other city in Canada.
