If you’ve ever flown WestJet, you can tell that it’s different from other airlines, at least in our experience. The workers really do care about their passengers and would happily chase down the owner of a lost wedding ring or wallet if it came down to it. And here’s another prime example. A pilot for WestJet is earning some serious accolades for his good deed, and it wasn’t even work-related.

He happened to be at Fredericton International Airport when an Air Canada flight to St. John’s was rerouted there instead because of bad weather. At around midnight, the weary passengers were told by an Air Canada employee at the airport that it wasn’t possible to get food delivered. That’s when the mystery pilot stepped in, like a freakin’ angelic superhero.

“Suddenly, a pilot emerges and says, ‘Hey guys, I’m from WestJet, we do things differently. Who wants some pizza?'” passenger John Samms recalled in a Facebook post. “Pizza arrived within 20 minutes or so. I think I heard him say he paid for it out of his own pocket.” Ah-mazing. All that was missing was his winged cape.

Samms explained that he doesn’t know how many pizzas arrived or how many people attacked the slices, but he said at least four extra-large pizzas were delivered to the terminal. “There was outwards applause when it happened.”

Air Canada apologized to its customers and acknowledged the WestJet employee, saying in a statement that “Unfortunately the food service was closed but thankfully, a caring customer, an airline employee himself, so truly empathetic to the situation, stepped up. Clearly we should have done better for our customers.”

Samms said, “That was the irritating part for me… I had taken it as perhaps a lack of effort on Air Canada staff. A little bit of effort can go a long way when it comes to customer service.”

But that’s the difference. It’s not really the Air Canada employee’s fault; rather, it’s about the WestJet pilot going above and beyond. The pilot didn’t want praise, just the satisfaction of helping people in a sucky situation. And while it might seem like a selfless act, perhaps it wasn’t entirely altruistic since you know those passengers will choose WestJet over Air Canada the next time they fly.
