Whenever a show returns for a second season, it usually promises to be “bigger and better.” That makes sense, because at that point the powers-that-be know what audiences like and respond to, making it that much easier to give us more of the same magic.
But does that mean there can be too much of a good thing? Not when it comes to The Masked Singer (Wednesday, 8 p.m., CTV). The second season features better singers, harder clues, and some of the most beautifully weird costumes ever shown on television. Truthfully, we’ve already starting guessing which celebs are underneath those colourful masks. Here are our thoughts on all of the new, improved, but still not sweat-proof costumes and who they could be IRL.
We’ve already got some guesses on this season’s ‘Masked Singer’ identities
The EggThis costume is all at once cute and weird and full of personality, and was apparently a specific request by the celeb in question. That means this person has the ability to fully hatch during the season if they play they cards right.
Clues: He doesn’t belong with bacon, his mom taught him to work hard for the first and last vowels of the alphabet (AU for gold?), and he is pro-team. Sounds like a gold-winning Olympian to us.CTV
The FlamingoThis costume is designed to ruffle some feathers… or maybe give its wearer a kink in her neck? The pretty plumage is colourful and draws our eyes, and we’d wager that whoever is wearing that thing embraces her femininity, loves the colour pink, and probably has a penchant for makeup.
Clues: Loves the colour pink and mascara. Fans who have heard early clips are convinced this is Adrienne Houghton. CTV
The LeopardA Leopard never changes its spots, but with a getup like this, it can definitely hide its natural silhouette. In fact, that’s the exact purpose of this season’s leopard costume, which also comes adorned with an English period piece ball gown. A hint to the celeb’s country of origin, perhaps?
Clues: The show’s security reminds her of the Secret Service and she’s been spotted with the president. Fans have been throwing their weight behind Omarosa Manigault and Michelle Obama (whose Secret Service nickname was “Renaissance”) as a result. CTV
The SkeletonThis costume is haunting in a dazzling way thanks to the gentlemanly suit and bedazzled eyes. We’re totally here for it and the personality within. The choice of a skeleton leads us to believe this is an older gent, maybe someone who has been the subject of a death hoax.
Clues: He’s made a reference to his “Skeleton Crew” and he stands in front of a gravestone reading 4-2-6-1. A birthday maybe? Chris Meloni is an early guess.CTV
Mr. FoxWhat we love most about the fox costume is that there’s so much to look at and dissect. From the superhero cape and the magical top hat to the mechanical makeup of the actual mask, there are lots of takeaways here. It’s kind of like being in a weird, musical version of Alice in Wonderland.
Clues: “This superhero is ready to devour the competition.” A superhero like Jeremy Renner, perhaps?CTV
ThingamajigThis is one of the most creative costumes to come out of The Masked Singer to date, even though we don’t really know what it is. With its funky green hair, wild bespectacled eyes and a posh checkered suit, this costume is a mood. And we have a feeling whoever is wearing it is quite cheeky.
Clues: This guy clocks in at seven feet, which leads us to believe he could be some kind of athlete. Meanwhile, the internet seems to be doubling down on Wayne Brady. CTV
The Ice CreamWe think of those old drive-in movie promos when we see this costume with its mint-green colouring and tan, cone-inspired suit. It’s certainly creative, but it doesn’t really pop in conjunction with some of the other flair-filled suits this season. Still, it’s a sweet idea.
Clues: “I'm made of sugar and dairy and I live for half of February.” That clue alone is driving fans to speculate the singer was born on Valentine’s Day; The Good Doctor himself, Freddie Highmore, is a top guess. CTV
The EagleThis is one fierce-looking bird, one that conjures up feelings of Americana and classic rock and even Harley Davidson. According to host Nick Cannon, the eagle’s wardrobe was specifically chosen by the celeb, which makes us wonder if there’s also an indigenous link to consider.
Clues: The Eagle says his competition will salute him (an AC/DC reference?) and that if you know an eagle’s body temperature (106 Fahrenheit) you’ll be hot on his tail. A radio host, perhaps?CTV
The ButterflyCan we please talk about those wings for a second? They’re covered in 10,000 hand-sewn sequins, which seems extra but is totally worth it because this costume is stunning. Meanwhile butterflies are known for metamorphosis, which means this celeb is bound to have a killer story.
Clues: She’s promising a “butterfly effect” and prays that she doesn’t fall over. So basically we’re flapping our wings around pointlessly trying to guess this one early. CTV
The PandaThis costume would be a bit more badass were the designers to switch out those pastels for some bolder colours, but we kind of dig the cutesy vibe this panda is giving off instead. In fact, it’s hard to tell from the photos and previews alone, but we kind of hope those are candy necklaces around Panda’s neck.
Clues: Sounds like this contestant is some sort of a chef or cook since they mention cooking bamboo, but how many chefs do you know that can sing? CTV
The FlowerFull disclaimer: we are totally freaked out by this costume, which looks like some sort of creepy display from a picture book meant to haunt children for not listening to their parents. That’s mostly due to the purple face and hollow eye sockets though; everything else about the getup is beautiful.
Clues: This contestant blossoms in all fields she plants herself in, and is ready to put the “petal to the metal.” She also stood behind the numbers 3-1-4, which seems important. Mayim Bialik is the internet’s top guess.CTV
The RottweilerThis is one top dog who is almost too cool for school with his backwards hat and chiseled abs. Maybe that’s why this costume feels less extravagant than the others? Either way we feel like this celeb is ready to be the best in show.
Clues: "Roses are blue, violets are red, but do you have a clue who's behind this doggy head?" Yeah, we’ve got nothing. Bow Wow, maybe? Although, his rhymes would be much tighter than that.CTV
The Black WidowIf you have arachnophobia, it’s probably best to immediately look away from this gorgeous-but-icky costume. From the elegant webbing to that haunting mask, this costume is scary, surreal and beautiful all at once. Also, are that many arms an asset or a hindrance?
Clues: She says, “You can guess my identity all you want, but I'm going to leave you hanging by a thread until the very end.” We believe it, especially since the other clue—a black widow playing card—yields nothing.CTV
The TreeWe’ve seen all kinds of Christmas trees in our lives, but this is one of the weirdest. Those baubles and lights are best described as kitschy glam, while the mask is like an old-school cartoon come to life. Whoever is under this thing is obviously best known around the holiday season.
Clues: This person has famous guests who come to set and need to wear their own masks, which means her people (or family) would easily give her away. Our early guess is Kris Jenner, whose annual holiday party is the soiree of the year. CTV
The PenguinThere aren’t a lot of distinctive features on this costume to rave about or ponder over, but we do enjoy the sleek tuxedo jacket and appreciate how hard it must be to actually see out of that mask. Whoever is sporting this costume gives us debonair vibes. Perhaps an old-school type performer?
Clues: This celeb is as cold as ice and changes hairstyles frequently. Cyndi Lauper and Vanilla Ice are some of the top guesses so far.CTV
The LadybugConsidering how elaborate and glam this costume is, it makes perfect sense that The Ladybug made her debut on the Emmy red carpet last weekend. We love the classic glitter paired with the latex-looking touches, all of which are capped with that gorgeous headpiece of pigtailed hair. Whoever this is, she’s taking flight.
Clues: None yet, but we’re already bugging out trying to figure out who it is. CTV
