Meghan Markle may now be a card-carrying member of the British Royal Family, but the Duchess of Sussex just received a resounding thumbs up from fashion royalty – the formidable, and famously inscrutable, Anna Wintour.

The long-reigning British editor of US Vogue was asked some frank questions in a video entitled ‘Anna Wintour Answers Questions From Total Strangers’ for the magazine’s YouTube channel, and the segment didn’t disappoint. In fact, the very first question was something we’ve surely all been wondering – what does she make of Britain’s newest royal, and more importantly, her controversial wedding dress?

Despite calls from some quarters that the dress needed an extra fitting and her hair looked untidy (we’re looking at you, Katy Perry and Emilia Wickstead), it seems the dress got the seal of approval from the fashion maven. Referencing the gown from French label Givenchy, designed by the British Clare Waight Keller, Wintour said, “I think that her choice was brilliant… it was sophisticated, it was chic, it was grown up. It was an English designer, albeit one that was working for a French house, which in a way was a message to the world, ‘Yes, I’m from somewhere else, but I belong’. I thought she looked fantastic.”

She also voiced her thoughts on other details of the day, “The fact that she chose to walk down the aisle by herself, I also thought spoke for an independent woman.” As we all remember, in her father Thomas’s absence, Meghan walked halfway down the aisle solo, before being met by Prince Charles.

Wintour went on to sympathize with the Duchess, defending reports that she’d been waking her staff at the crack of dawn with text messages. “I read somewhere there were members of the royal household that were confused and upset that she woke up so early at 5am… she’s a normal California girl, gets up early and does yoga, and meditates, and also sent a lot of text messages. I mean, what do they expect, that she was going to send messages via pigeon? So, I think she’s amazing.” It seems safe to guess Wintour’s staff are probably setting some pretty early alarm clocks, too.

In fact, she went so far as to heap praise on not just Meghan, but sister-in-law, Kate Middleton too. “I think… the young duchesses that they have in Britain, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex, are going to keep the Royal Family afloat, quite frankly.” Quite the statement, but if anyone would know about staying the course, it’s Wintour.
