On the surface, it doesn’t seem as though Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley have much in common at all. Heck, we’re hard pressed to even think of anything they’ve ever even acted together in.
Until now that is.
That’s because HBO is recognizing the unique talents and overall awesomeness of all three of these women, and has cast them together for their upcoming project, Big Little Lies. Okay so technically right now Woodley is still just in talks to join the series, but the other two are firm and Woodley is expected to firm up her own offer next week. (She’s such a Divergent, that one.)
So what exactly is Big Little Lies about? Well, picture Kindergarten Cop, except without Arnold Schwarzenegger. Or the comedy. And maybe a little more killing. Alright so maybe it’s not like that movie at all, but it does revolve around kindergarten kids and three of their mothers, as played by these actresses. The twist? Their picture perfect lives slowly unravel to the point of murder.
If this sounds a little Serial Mom to you, don’t worry. First of all it’s not being touted as a dark comedy, but as a drama, and second of all there is strong source material from which it originates. You see, Big Little Lies is based on the New York Times best-selling book by Liane Moriarty, who also wrote gems like What Alice Forgot and The Husband’s Secret.
This project is such a hot ticket item (did we mention it’s also produced by David E. Kelley?) that it even induced a bidding war between HBO and Netflix. Luckily HBO won out and now the cable network is planning to unveil a pilot sometime within the next year.
Excuse us if we’re having a hard time waiting.
