People always go on and on about how hot Las Vegas is, especially in the summer, and in this particular case, they’re right.

The 14th floor pool area at The Cosmopolitan hotel (or “Cosmo” for short) mysteriously erupted with fire on Saturday afternoon, taking down palm trees and poolside cabanas. We imagine several bachelor, bachelorette and miscellaneous parties also went up in flames.

As large plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky and over The Strip, terrified guests fled to safety and over 100 firefighters rushed to the scene. Only one person was taken to hospital, and a second was treated for smoke inhalation at the hotel.

“There was some damage to some windows…and very, very minor damage to the building. It was contained to the pool area,” Clark County Assistant Fire Chief Sandra Baker told Reuters in a phone interview. No one confirmed the cause of the fire, but investigations are ongoing.

So all in all, a lot of spectacle for very little damage — the fire was out 30 minutes after it began, and the casino reopened less than an hour-and-a-half later. Sounds about right for Vegas.
