If you're anything like us, you are probably having a bit of a frustrating week —you have no clue who is behind the masks for any of the contestants on The Masked Singer; This Is Us has already made you cry and you desperately want to help Lenny Kravitz find his shades. Although there isn’t much we can do to about the above, we can definitely offer some suggestions about what to watch this weekend. The Deuce (Crave + Movies + HBO)Legendary show creator David Simon’s latest drama, The Deuce, is worth catching up on before the series finale on October 28th. Following in the legacy of other Simon series like The Wire and Treme, The Deuce is a witty, gritty slow burning drama. It chronicles the rise of the porn industry in Manhattan, New York from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s and make a point of showing how various players are affected, manipulated, burned or manipulating as the dollars start to roll in. Perhaps one the biggest snubs at the Emmys this year, the series also features an A-list cast which includes, James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Method Man. If you've enjoyed David Simon's work in the past, The Deuce is a must-watch.
The Hummingbird Project (Crave + Movies + HBO)Repeat after us: "Country home on the hills, small road, hummingbirds." Consider yourself warned because we guarantee that you will mumble that sequence at least once to yourself after watching The Hummingbird Project. Diving into the unexpectedly wacky and exciting world of high-frequency trading, the film follows a race to build a straight fiber optic cable line between Kansas and New Jersey. While the premise sounds dull, the lengths to which the characters will go is not—especially considering the prize would be hundreds of millions of dollars. Trust us, it's a wild ride and this Canadian film is full of big names like Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgard and Salma Hayek.
Hidden Gem: Piercing (Crave + Movies + HBO)It’s not too early to start thinking horror with October and Halloween just around the corner. This week’s hidden gem is the creepy horror thriller, Piercing. Based on the novel of the same name by Japanese writer Ryū Murakami, the movie follows Reed, a seemingly normal working-class man, with a twisted fantasy. After convincing his wife and newborn daughter that he's away on a business trip, he rents a hotel room to fulfill his darkest desire—the perfect murder. However, his victim, an unhinged call girl named Jackie, has a range of dark fantasies herself. By the time the night is over, it's hard to tell who the cat and mouse are in this deadly game.
