In classic Scorsese fashion, the film centres on a ruthless Irish Mob boss played by Jack Nicholson, a deep undercover agent's attempt to bring him down and a dirty cop’s efforts to counter him as he rises within the ranks of made men. On top of industry heavy eights Nicholson and DiCaprio, the cast gets even better with Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin and Anthony Anderson. Not to mention the film also cleaned up at the Oscars in 2007, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing. You can revisit The Departed today on STARZ.
Twelve MonkeysBrad Pitt’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar nom for Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood marks the second time he's been nominated in the category. The first time was in 1996 for his role as the loony Jeffrey Goines in the film Twelve Monkeys. Set in a future where humanity lives underground, the Terry Gilliam neo-noir sci-fi flick follows a convict, played by Bruce Willis, who is sent back in time on a mission to gather information on an organization believed to be responsible for releasing a pandemic virus that wipes out the majority of the population. No stranger to industry accolades, even before her first individual acting nomination, Zellweger was holding her own in Oscar-caliber films. In Jerry Maguire, nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing in 1997, Zellweger plays Dorothy Boyd, the love interest and loyal secretary to the film's namesake protagonist. The iconic show-me-the-money man was of course played by Tom Cruise who was nominated for Best Actor for the role that same year. The film also features Cuba Gooding, Jr. as the fictional Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rodney Tidwell, a role that won him the Best Supporting Actor Oscar that year.
