It was a frustrating finish for Michaelia Drever and Hamilton Elliot on The Amazing Race Canada as they found themselves back in their home province of Nova Scotia. After a rewarding Chilean leg that saw the couple winning two express passes, landing themselves six free months of gas from Petro-Canada and two Air Canada economy tickets to New Delhi, India, Halifax brought a series of new challenges.

After kicking butt on a variety of challenges, including climbing Halifax’s 103 metre tall Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, the Centreville, NS team faced an unexpected obstacle that would be their eventual undoing.

We caught up with Hamilton and Michaelia to find out what went wrong, and whether they can survive the passport mishap (Spoiler: Of course they can, and we’d expect nothing less.)

How is Jon’s poker face? Did you know it was coming?

Drever: Yeah, you never know what’s gonna happen the second you get to that mat. He just looks at you and he’s just … flat faced. I’m like…maaaan, maaaan.

Elliot: Although he did look pretty upset when we showed up.

Yes he did. That’s when we started to get teary.

Drever: I know, I was like Jonnn, only give me good news. But he didn’t.

After the elimination, what was the first thing you guys did?

Elliot: We hugged it out. We were like, ok well, we tried our best. Like, it was all that we could do.

You didn’t go get a beer at one of those bars?

Drever: Once everything was said and done we were like, It’s about time we had one beer.

What’s the reaction been like back home so far?

Drever: Everybody has been so incredibly supportive. It’s been incredible, honestly. I don’t think we’ve had any problems. Everywhere we go, like our little Kwikway down the road from us is like, Congratulations Hamilton and Michaelia,  we’ve seen you on the Amazing Race and we’re so proud of you. It’s just really sweet.

What was your proudest moment from the Race?

Drever: I was literally so proud every day. We were really, I dunno, just being able to give back to a community that you know wasn’t as well off as maybe you had been or something like that, um, and help them out. I know Hamilton and I took a little extra time with our paintings and we wanted to make sure it all looked very precise and everything and Victor kept saying, “No, you’re good to go, you’re good, you’re good.” and we just, we knew that that’s going to be something that’s gonna be there forever and we didn’t want to just rush it.

What about your not-so-proudest moment?

Elliot: Oh, when I forgot my passport. Yeah, we were doing so well, we would have finished like third that day and we had to go back to the airport and wait it out, so…

Do you regret using your Express Pass early?

Drever: Oh my goodness no. I think that was probably the best decision we made on that race.

Elliot: It wouldn’t have helped us in Halifax. We finished really early and we got to the airport and it was all about waiting for it to come back from Toronto.

How long did it actually take at the airport for them to get it?

Elliot: It was a couple hours

Drever: Yeah, it was a while. It was enough to make sure that we were eliminated, so…

Hamilton, you were so open about who you are on the show. How’s the response been?

Elliot: It’s been really positive. I’ve had a lot of people say that I’m very inspirational and a role model. It’s weird to say cause I never really thought I would be a role model or anything. It never really hit me how huge it was to go on the show until like, I saw all of the comments that people were saying and I just hope that I’ve helped some people with just being comfortable with themselves.

It must be really hard not to get mad at each other as you’re going. How do you stay positive?

Drever: We’re a generally happy couple anyway.

Elliot: Well honestly we were pretty good. We were good up until I forgot my passport. She was a little frustrated with me, but she, after she took it all in…

Drever: After I freak out a little bit

Elliot: She understood like I was excited to be home and I just like, it all happened so fast, you just ran off the place and I didn’t have time to check our seat or anything so it uh, yeah, she was upset at first and then she was just really supportive and I think running the whole leg instead of taking taxis really took our frustration out.

What did you learn about each other?

Elliot: I learned that she has a lot of patience with me (laughs) and I didn’t think you could get closer to your partner, but you have so much time to spend together so we learned a lot more about each other and it made our bond a lot closer. It’s just nice to see that we both accomplished a bunch of things like on the race and yeah, it was just a really good experience that made us really close.

What was the hardest moment overall?

Drever: Really, the elimination!

Hamilton: Yeah, that was the worst cause we were doing so well, and for me to just make that one little mistake, then, like honestly, if we didn’t then I know we could have won the whole race, like we were doing so well.

Who do you want to win?

Drever and Elliot: Brent and Sean for sure.

Elliot: We want east coast to take it home this season.

You’re still in the race for Fuel Your Team fan prize race, so why should people vote for you?

Drever: We want to get it for our wedding present, I’m just saying. No, I think it would be incredible. We’re not really a traditional couple where we take trips and just do stuff like that, we really love to travel so we want to travel as much as possible so…
