We’re going to introduce you, dear readers, to a new fashion term. One we’re dubbing “cleavage outlining.” Cleavage outlining is the act of using small strips of material to accentuate the top curve part of the breast. Why would someone want to do that, you ask? We’re not so sure. But what we do know is that half of Tinseltown is picking up on this would-be trend.
Rita Ora and Joan Smalls both gave cleavage outlining a go. And we really wish they hadn’t. It does this weird thing to the chest area, kind of turning the whole décolletage into a real life colouring book. Where are our markers!?
Who wore it worse: Rita Ora or Joan Smalls?
Andra DayWhat is going on with singer Andra Day’s red print ensemble? Are those pants or is this a dress that we’re looking at? Not that one or the other would make this look any better. And just to confuse our brains a bit more, she popped on a pair of giant gold hoops earrings. ‘Cause that makes sense. Getty Images
Ariel WinterModern Family actress Ariel Winter’s black-and-gold pinstripe suit, with its cleavage and midriff-bearing top, is far from family appropriate, Modern or otherwise. What would your grandmother say, Ariel? In all likelihood, pretty much what we just did.Getty Images
DayaThis is the kind of frock we imagine Ariel from The Little Mermaid wearing. (You know, if she were real.) But instead Daya ended up looking like a sad fish out of water, pairing the silver scaled garment with white high tops.Getty Images
Elle FanningSo, the same night that Elle Fanning feted her new Variety cover, Madonna (probably somewhere fabulous) was celebrating her 58th birthday. What a coincidence! Sadly, Madonna’s birthday isn’t an excuse to dress like a dated ’80s version of the Material Girl herself. While the idea is cute, the see-through corset top and ballet skirt is a big fat no.Getty Images
Heather LocklearWhile Heather Locklear gets an A+ for her strong hair game, the beige, off-the-shoulder top and bunny slipper heels (ummmm… what!?) are total fails. Is there anything lower than an F? Because we’re ready to give it here.Getty Images
Heather MorrisWe had a dress like this....back in 2001! There are some cute elements-the black bra, the gold-accented clutch, for example-but the tulip skirt and sequin material look so dated on the former Glee actress. Even that winning smile can't save thisGetty Images
Jackie CruzJackie Cruz’s obvious defense is that she’s an entertainer performing at an event. And while this certainly is entertaining, the fact doesn’t get her off the hook for this patchwork jumpsuit. Hopefully she brought something to change into after the show.Getty Images
Jackie CruzUh oh. It appears the “something” Cruz brought to change into was yet another fashion dud. This time in brown, high-waisted, pleated pants and matching halter top, Cruz managed to strike out a second time in the same night. Is there a third option? Getty Images
Jessica SzohrActress Jessica Szohr walked the War Dogs red carpet wearing a mishmash of lace and cheetah print, which are two words that should never be used in the same sentence. From the confusing ruffled skirt to the deep-V neckline on her blazer, which, yeah, revealed yet another cleavage-outlining bra top, there’s no saving Jessica this week.Getty Images
Joan SmallsJoan Smalls, you are a beautiful creature. And shiny pencil skirt and matching bra top that you wore in Dubai is so stunning, but what’s with the bits of fabric that trace the top part of your boobs? This cleavage outlining detail has been popping up everywhere and we’re not on board.Getty Images
Lake BellIt’s August, but Lake Bell looks like she started to make a Halloween costume, and then got distracted and decided to walk a red carpet. The basic black dress, long blah braids and Maryjane heels could not be further from a late summer ensemble.Getty Images
Natalie PortmanIs Natalie Portman going to her own baptism? Because she sure looks #blessed in this adult baptism dress. The white, frothy material, loose cut, and dangling bits from her wrists are all reminiscent of a church ceremony. Getty Images
Rita OraYup, another cleavage outlining ensemble, similar to fellow worst dressed star Joan Smalls. Ladies, what’s with this trend? It kind of looks like a colouring book pattern… but with breasts. Again, this dress may have made it into our best dressed list if it wasn’t for that geometric, boob-enhancing feature ruining it all. Getty Images
Sherri ShepherdTV host Sherri Shepherd’s peplum dress looks more like a figure skating costume. And not an Olympic-medal-winning skating costume. Not even bronze. Why is she wearing a white turtle neck under this strapless dress? We’re confused. Next time, let’s pick something more figure flattering, Sherri. Getty Images
Taryn ManningTaryn Manning is always teetering between classy and…something else. And this week, the OITNB actress was so close to winning our fashionable hearts over in a pretty checked dress. But then she (okay, okay, the designer… but she still wore it!) littered the skirt with weird black embellishments. Also, the makeshift belt looks more like electrical tape. Next!Getty Images
Vanessa HudgensSo, some context: Vanessa was at an event where she gave away running shoes to school children in LA. How wonderful! But the former Disney star’s teeny-bopper look was so over the top—from the choker to the plaid shirt tied around her waist—it looked like she was in costume. A clear case of trying too hard.Getty Images
