Fans of The View are well aware that host Whoopi Goldberg has been absent for quite some time battling and then recovering from a nasty bout of pneumonia. Joy Behar has been keeping the public vaguely updated about Whoopi’s health status (and notably, the fact she wasn’t actually prepping to host the Oscars) but for the first time, Whoopi has come out herself to explain her situation and ease our minds about the state of her health. Well, sort of.

In a short pre-recorded video on The View Friday, Goldberg revealed that at one point, she “came very close to leaving the earth.”

“Hey, yes, it’s me. I am here. I am up and moving around -- not as fast as I’d like to be -- but I am okay,” she said. “I’m not dead. So, here’s what happened.”

She explained that she had pneumonia in both lungs which caused her body to go into sepsis -- a potentially deadly reaction to infection.

“There was fluid, there was all kinds of stuff going on and yes, I came very, very close to leaving the earth, but good news – I didn’t,” she said.

Whoopi went on to thank viewers and everyone else for their well wishes.

“Even people who aren’t huge fans of mine have actually said nice things about me,” she joked. “We all know that’s going to change when I get back, but for right now, it’s brilliant.”

She ended the video with a kiss and promised that she’d explain the whole ordeal further "when we’re all at the table.”
