How recent is too recent to #throwback to? Seriously, we’re asking.
We’ve been noticing a red carpet movement to repeat outfits, whether they be from five years, 10 years, 20 years or 50 years ago. But we’re here to say that just because the hashtag #throwbackthursday doesn’t care which decade you’re featuring, fashion unfortunately, does.
Sorry, we don’t make the rules. We just point out when other people break them.
Check out Oprah Winfrey, Allison Williams, Lake Bell and more #FBF or #TBT fails.
Whose #ThrowBack sucked more: Elle Fanning or Iggy Azalea?
Christina HendricksMad Men actress Christina Hendricks looked less than ideal in this blue boat neck dress with metallic appliqué. Whether it’s because of the matching blue accessories or her frizzy hair, we’re not sure, but we just can’t wrap our heads around this one. Getty Images
Lucy LiuOnce again, beading and sequins have landed yet another capable celebrity in our burn book. Actress Lucy Liu gave a sad nod to the ‘50s when she decided on a pastel yellow chiffon dress with a less than flattering halter-neckline. Getty Images
Oprah WinfreyEven the most die-hard Oprah fans have to admit, the mogul phoned it in with this combo of a t-shirt thrown over a gown. The skirt could’ve paired with lots of things, but not this. Getty Images
Kerry WashingtonScandal actress Kerry Washington failed to capture our hearts with this look. Rocking an unflattering floral sheath and a beehive hairdo, Washington would’ve been better served with a different outfit to show off that gorgeous baby bump. Getty Images
Elle FanningThe ‘80s made an unfortunate comeback this week at The Neon Demon premiere, with actress Elle Fanning’s heavily sequined floral number. While the shape of the dress was extremely flattering, the sequins and floral pattern were plain off. Getty Images
Iggy AzaleaAlso taking a cue from decades past, Iggy Azalea sported a bandage skirt and crop top at an event this week. Is it too early to start calling trends from the 2000s a throwback? Getty Images
Kristen StewartWhile Kristen Stewart showed off a more feminine side this week with a long sleeve lace floral dress, we were far from enamored with this look. We say stick to the tough biker chic-styles she’s been rocking. They suit her personality much more. Getty Images
Allison WilliamsGIRLS actress Allison Williams looks like a magazine cover circa 2012. Although she made a step in the right direction when decided on the white jumpsuit, the look fell apart when one leg was (on purpose?) bunched up, as if she had just been on a long bike commute from her house. Jena MaloneJena Malone must have missed the “spring has arrived” memo. The Hunger Games actress’ goth-inspired black lace dress, sheer black tights, and black sandals were colder than a Winnipeg Christmas, and not half as merry. Getty Images
Lake BellThis trend can (and has) worked on the red carpet before, but it didn’t this week for Lake Bell. The flimsy mesh bottom of the skirt clashes with the rest of the dress. It’s a simple problem with a simple solution: change. Getty Images
Julianne HoughThe bouffant hairstyle Julianne Hough chose to go with perfectly matches her predictable red dress. Were this 2005, we’d vote her prom queen, fo sho. Getty Images
Karolina KurkovaModel Karolina Kurkova could wear almost anything and make it look fabulous. There’s a short list of not-to-wears and this, unfortunately, is on it. What did we just say about the ’80s? Getty Images
Rose ByrneRose Byrne earned our attention when she arrived at the Tony Awards wearing a black and red sequined dressed with a cold-shoulder detailing and a questionable neckline. The problem was that it was the wrong kind of attention. Can we look away now? Getty Images
Busy PhillipsWhile spring may be the time to bring the florals out of the garden, this dress, worn by actress Busy Phillips, would be best kept in the greenhouse. Clashing with the wall of red roses in the behind her, this photo op grew into a floral mess. Getty Images
Serena WilliamsAt a party to celebrate the premiere of her new documentary, Serena Williams stepped out in a midriff-baring crop top and leather pants that though showcasing her athleticism, didn’t fit the event. If you’re asking, Serena, we would’ve paired the top with a pair of high-waisted wide leg pants instead. Getty Images
Shay MitchelWe’re not going to lie to you. Pretty Little Liars star, Shay Mitchell’s outfit this week didn’t wow us. She scored a few points with the off-the-shoulder top, but lost them and more with the high-waisted pants and milk-maid braid that clashed with the easy-breezy top. Getty Images
Adrienne BailonWhile confidence is the key to a great outfit, we aren’t so keen on this bold statement. Singer Adrienne Bailon had her cleavage front and center at an event this week and we just can’t agree with this outfit choice. From the cape to the camel toe, it’s utterly audacious. Getty Images
