In the iconic words of Avril Lavigne, “you’re trying to be cool, you look like a fool to me.” Okay, maybe we shouldn’t be taking style advice from the girl who convinced us that wearing ties over T shirts was a good idea. However, Avril’s diatribe against overcomplication is especially relevant this week.
This week’s celebrity events brought a lot of outfits that proved these stars don’t believe in the old adage that less is more. Hailee Steinfeld, Amy Adams and Chrissy Teigen could benefit from listening to Avril’s first album Let Go. Maybe it would inspire them to let go of the crazy fabrics we saw this week.
Why do these stars have to go and make their looks so complicated?
Bryce Dallas HowardThis dress visually chops Bryce into pieces. She looks like she was wearing a cute leopard dress and someone slapped some censor bars on top because they were jealous of how good she looked. If this dress was all that leopard print with a slip underneath, it wouldn’t look so harsh.Getty Images
Kyra SedgwickIt’s a good move for Kyra to capitalize on her bright colouring by complementing it with a sunny yellow colour, but velvet was never meant to be made in yellow. We like the patchy fade at the top, but the pairing of a heavy, warm fabric with a bright summery colour isn’t working.Getty Images
Lilly Rose DeppWe understand that for someone born into the spotlight, going to events might seem like an everyday thing, but that doesn’t mean you should wear your everyday clothes. This isn’t a bad outfit necessarily, but it’s too casual for a film premiere.Getty Images
Tallia StormTallia’s music career started when Elton John took her under his wing, and clearly the eccentrically dressed crooner rubbed off on her in more ways than one. This outfit is all over the place with the weird blue boots, sheer top and a faux fur stole with what might be a flower on it.Getty Images
Hailee SteinfeldThe only element of this dress that throws this look off is the rows of circle cut outs. Combined with the embroidery, it makes for a busy dress, and it’s hard to know where to look. It seems like the designer thought that the dress might look too dowdy so they overcompensated by throwing it in a hole puncher.Getty Images
Deepika PadukoneOur problems with this Bollywood star’s look start with the over-the-top tassel earrings and end with the size of the bustier. The top is a little too large, throwing off the proportions of the overall look, and the earrings are just a little too much accessory when paired with that belt. Getty Images
Amy AdamsAmy definitely made a good decision to wear a futuristic look to the premiere of her sci-fi movie Arrival, but we’re not loving this look at the future. The layered mesh reminds us of fishing nets and micro chips. Maybe we’d be more receptive if the dress accentuated her shape more. Getty Images
Jaime KingIf you look closely, this look actually isn’t as grandma as it first appears. You can see some skin through the lace, but because it is so light and Jaime’s skin so fair, it doesn’t really come across. Instead it looks like a nightgown or the dress your religious aunt makes you wear to church because she thinks your jeans are too tight.Getty Images
Haley BennettThis is a cute number—there’s no way around it. But is it too cute? Well, it made this list, so… By our taste, the combo of the corset boning around the waist, the low scoop neck and the bright floral appliques make it borderline too sweet. Getty Images
Ashlee SimpsonIn the past we’ve loved Ashlee’s edgy style, but this look is falling flat. The jacket is too big and the only interesting thing to look at on the actual dress is the zipper down the front. The bag, however, is absolutely fabulous. We also appreciate the toned down make up, but it isn’t enough to save this outfit.Getty Images
Arden MyrinWe just know that Arden Myrin can do better. This look is simply too flat, and the messy bun hair isn’t helping. She would be the best dressed mom at a PTA meeting in this outfit, but it doesn’t pass muster on a red carpet. Next time she should swap the high waisted pants for a chic skirt with a pattern or some colour.Getty Images
Tinie TempahHe looks less like a rapper and more like the child of Bono and Don Cherry. The brown-beige houndstooth and rose-coloured glasses are too much for most eyeballs, we expect. The he goes and puts a bowtie on it. Sigh.Getty Images
Charlie XCXCharli XCX often sports bold bubble gum pink looks, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. This one doesn’t. The top is like a toddler’s bathing suit top, and the bottoms are like a bad tribute to ABBA. The pink furry thing she’s holding looks super soft though, so that’s something.Getty Images
Keri HilsonKeri Hilson’s makeup is absolutely flawless, but the styling for this look is less than praiseworthy. The crisp shiny high-waisted trousers are too column-like and don’t fit quite right at the hips, and the blouse is squaring and predictable.Getty Images
Bebe RexhaThis outfit is all caps HOT. Good for Bebe for rocking what she’s got, but it does look a bit vulnerable, specifically at the zipper, which is so puckered and strained it look like it’s going to burst at any moment. Getty Images
Chrissy TeigenHey, we have a bag that looks just like this dress! Indeed, this fabric looks very luxurious, but is more suited to a bag or pair of shoes than a dress. There’s a heaviness to the (hopefully faux) reptile skin that seems thick and bunchy. We would love this look in a lighter fabric.Getty Images
