If you’re desperate to get in shape and try out a new diet, juice cleanses are not the answer.
According to Lauren Blake, a dietitian from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centre, “there’s not a lot of scientific evidence showing that cleanses work. When you’re restricting your calories so heavily, you’re going to lose weight, but people who follow these cleanses tend to put the weight right back on and leave themselves at risk of developing nutritional deficiencies.” However, there is scientific evidence to prove that juice cleanses don’t work.
Filling your diet with nothing but juice means that you’re not getting any protein or fibre. And since juicing removes the part of the fruit that has fibre in it, you’re not going to feel very full. Plus, the lack of protein and fibre (which monitors your blood sugar levels) will leave you weak with jittery sugar highs and exhausting crashes.
On top of all these “benefits” to a juice cleanse, drinking juice for every meal is generally more expensive than buying the groceries you need to stay healthy.
So while a juice cleanse may work if you’re desperate to lose a touch of weight in a very short period of time, it isn’t the healthiest long-term solution to losing weight. Watch the video above to learn more about why juice cleanses aren’t even worth your time.
