The Will & Grace reboot is officially coming to an end. The cast and crew of the NBC show announced on social media late on Thursday that the next season, set to debut in January 2020, with be the show’s last.

The original series ran from 1998 to 2006 and returned with a 10-minute mini reunion in 2016, which featured the original cast of Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Meghan Mullally and Sean Hayes reprising their roles as Will, Grace, Karen and Jack. The foursome got together to encourage Americans to vote in the 2016 election and the viral video clicked with both old and new fans, leading to the show receiving a ninth season, which included 16 episodes and debuted in September 2017. Following the success of the reboot, Will & Grace was renewed at the same time for an 18-episode tenth and eleventh season.

Executive producers Max Mutchnick, David Kohan and James Burrows released a joint statement along with the cast to Variety on Thursday, writing “We think of the Will & Grace reboot episodes the way Karen Walker thinks of martinis – 51 is not enough, 53 is too many. That is why, after consulting with the cast, we all have decided this will be the final season of ‘Will & Grace.’”

The cast and crew reacted to the news on social media, with Messing writing that the decision to end the show was made by the creative team. Thanking the fans for their support, Messing wrote “We were so lucky to have the opportunity to reunite and do the show AGAIN. It was only supposed to be 10 episodes, but because of you, the fans, it has turned into 3 YEARS. What a miracle. We are all committed to making this season the best ever, and to wrap up the story of Will, Grace, Jack and Karen in a way that feels meaningful and right.”

We are all committed to making this season the best ever, and to wrap up the story of Will, Grace, Jack and Karen in a way that feels meaningful and right. Sharing the same group photo on his Instagram, McCormack wrote “Well, we’re taking this one out like we brought it in: with love, laughs, gratitude… and on our own terms. Season 3 of #WillandGrace (well, season 11) will be our grand finale… and it’s gonna be fantastic!”

“All things must pass, and the Will & Grace television program is no exception,” wrote Mullally on her Instagram. “We’ve decided to end the show after this 3rd revival season… I know, it’s very sad! We’ll miss you!”

Joking about a possible future reboot, Hayes shared a promo photo on his Instagram page and wrote “What a blast it’s been reliving these characters for these three seasons. Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to entertain you. I am forever grateful. We’ll see you in 10 years for the third installment!”

The beloved NBC sitcom was able to recapture much of the success of the original, with the rebooted series receiving Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards and nominations. The recent trend towards reboots on the small screen has helped to take the sting out of our favourite shows ending. If you wish there were new episodes of a show that ended years ago, just wait. Wait for it…
