Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful woman in Italy named Laura Mesi. Naturally, her wedding day was perfect, complete with a stunning, white dress, a three-tiered cake and 70 guests waiting to see her walk down the aisle. The 40-year-old fitness trainer stood in all her glory as she made the ultimate commitment to marry… herself.

“I firmly believe that each of us must first of all love ourselves,” Mesi told the BBC. “You can have a fairy tale even without the prince.” You go, girl!

‘Sologamy,’ getting married to oneself, is a growing trend. It’s all about self-love and acceptance — something that’s typically linked to couples.

Mesi told Italian newspaper La Repubblica that the idea came about two years ago, when a 12-year relationship came to an end.

“I told friends and family that if I had not found my soulmate by my 40th birthday I would marry myself,” she told the paper. “If one day I find a man with whom I can plan a future I’ll be happy, but my happiness does not depend on him.” Yes, endorsing ALL of this.

Mesi’s self-wedding has received mixed reactions on social media, with some calling her “mad,” “out of [her] mind,” and some other not-so-nice things. But she told the BBC that “nothing and no one can turn off my smile.”

The newlywed did admit, however, that it’s not for everyone, and aside from the support of loved ones and money to pay for the ceremony, one also needs “a pinch of madness.”

Madness? Pshaw. This is nothing but glorious. In the wise words of Justin Bieber: “baby, you should go and love yourself.” Because loving yourself, knowing yourself and committing to being the the best self you can be — what’s not to love about that?
