High heels can do quite a number on your feet, especially if you’re required to wear them all day. While “required” might seem a silly term to use when discussing high-heeled footwear, there is a place where risking injury and bloodied and blistered feet is mandatory. That place is the Cannes Film Festival, and it is in France where women are being turned away from gala screenings because of their shoes.
This is reportedly what happened to Vicci Ho, a former festival programmer, Asif Kapadia’s wife and comedian Samantha Baines. The lot were told they were not permitted to attend because of their footwear, but after some explanation as to why they could not wear heels, the ladies were let in.
But word travels fast at Cannes, because Emily Blunt has expressed her own dissatisfaction with the rule, noting, “That’s very disappointing. You think there’s these new waves of equality. Everyone should wear flats to be honest. We shouldn’t wear high heels anyway.”
And in a show of solidarity, Denis Villeneuve, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin have all stated that they would walk the red carpet in heels. So, while Cannes might not be quick to update its traditions, some of the men will participate in them in order to walk a mile in a woman’s shoes.
