Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy, the man behind the logical, lovable and beloved Mr. Spock, died Friday morning at his home in Los Angeles, reports The New York Times. He was 83.
His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed the death, saying it was due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Nimoy first announced he was sick last year, tweeting, “I quit smoking 30 yrs ago. Not soon enough.” He went on to warn, “Smokers, please understand. If you quit after you’re diagnosed with lung damage, it’s too late.”
Nimoy the man routinely dispensed his personal wisdom with us and, in character as the iconic Mr. Spock, left us with many more words to live by. Here are some of our favourites:
“Insufficient facts always invite danger.”
“It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want.”
“The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”
“Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”
“Evil does seek to maintain power by suppressing the truth, or by misleading the innocent.”
On what really matters
“After a time, you may find that ‘having’ is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as “wanting.” It is not logical, but it is often true.”
On having a dark side
“In the strict scientific sense we all feed on death — even vegetarians.”
“Insults are effective only where emotion is present.”
On dreaming big
“Life and death are seldom logical. But attaining a desired goal always is.”
On being true to one’s self
“The release of emotion is what keeps us health. Emotionally healthy.”
On trying new things
“Change is the essential process of all existence.”
“Every living thing wants to survive.”
Again though, the words of the man himself resonate most of all: “The miracle is this — the more we share, the more we have.” As will his final tweet, a reminder for us to live in the now.
A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP
