Prom is an important night for a lot of students as they come to the end of their high school career. For one teen in Texas it was even more special because he chose his mother as his date, and the reason why is absolutely heartwarming.

Joe Moreno made a promise to his mother Vanessa when he was in middle school that he would take her to his senior prom. He wanted to take her because she never had the chance to attend her own prom and he knew it was important to her.

“My mom had me at 17, so she didn’t get to experience prom,” the teen told Fox News on Tuesday. “I just really wanted to take her.”

“It was a sacrifice that I had made. My sacrifice was to give my children my all. I put everything into him. I push them to become everything they can,” Vanessa said, speaking of her son Joe and his siblings. “It was something I felt I had to sacrifice so that I could work and give to my child without anyone else helping me.”

“Senior year came up and he brought up prom and I kept asking who he was taking, and he kept reassuring that it was me,” Vanessa said.

Some people gave him some flak for his date, but most, including the school’s faculty, loved the gesture. Joe says that some people were “really emotional because it was such as beautiful thing.”

Joe also helped his mother pick out her prom dress and even picked out a corsage for her. Can it get any cuter than that? Yes, it can. He even went the extra mile and “picked her up like a real date and walked in arm-in-arm with her.” They spent the night dancing and taking ridiculous photos as one does at prom.

People online were touched by the gesture and couldn’t get over how cute it was.

“Sometimes people don’t know the sacrifices us mothers make. We just hope that it does get seen, and I am so glad my son did see my sacrifice and wanted to give back. It meant the world to me,” said Vanessa.

“This is something that will last in her memory forever,” said Joe. “It really means so much [to me] to give that opportunity to her.”
