You could say that Kevin the cat was down to the last of his nine lives by the time he was found three weeks ago.

Truck driver Dennis McDonald was driving through Burnaby when he found the cat severely injured by the side of the road. Instead of continuing on his route, McDonald brought his five-tonne rig to a halt and immediately got out to help the tiny animal.

“He was disoriented, he was bleeding all over. It was pretty gruesome,” he said.

It turns out poor Kevin had been hit by a car. So McDonald, wasting no time, loaded the cat into his truck and took an emergency detour straight to the Burnaby SPCA branch.

Once there, staff contacted the Burnaby Veterinary Hospital, where they were able to pull some strings and secure a free treatment for Kevin from a local animal clinic. The veterinarians there even agreed to cover the after-care expenses.

“Just the extent of what [Kevin’s] been through and what these people have done, I’m just so very grateful,” McDonald said.

Days later, McDonald received a call from the SPCA saying that Kevin’s old owner had surrendered the cat, and they asked if he wanted to adopt him.

Guess what his answer was?

Because McDonald is a Star Wars fan, he’s since decided to change Kevin’s name to BB-8. You can watch the full heartwarming story in the video above.
