Looking for a greener, more natural approach to makeup? Try switching to mineral foundation. Mineral makeup is a naturally-sourced powder that’s often found in foundation form, but sometimes it can be found in colour cosmetics, too. It’s made of — surprise, surprise — minerals.

Sarah Sumnauth, owner of Urban Minerals makeup, says that many more traditional makeup brands include fillers and preservatives that may be damaging to both our skin and our overall health, citing mineral oil, parabens and plasticizers as real health concerns. The first sign of adverse health effects, says Sumnauth? Breakouts — something you won’t have to worry about with mineral makeup.

Urban Minerals is formulated with minerals often used in sunblocks, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide along with herbal ingredients like nettle root extract, aloe vera, chamomile and rosemary leaf extract with iron oxides for colour.

“The mineral pigments were chosen for their special benefits to the skin,” says Sumnauth, adding that together the mineral and herbal ingredients offer anti-inflammatory properties, skin healing properties and UV protection.

Why We Love It

While of course the skincare benefits are amazing, powder mineral foundation feels light on the skin and, says Sumnauth, will last between six to eight hours before needing a touch-up. When applied over moisturizer and a primer, you can expect your mineral makeup to last through a full workday. Plus, Urban Minerals carries 30 shades, from deep cocoa to the lightest ivory, so there’s definitely a shade that will match every skin tone.
