We all have that one friend on Instagram who always posts gorgeous pictures of themselves travelling to exotic places. Admit it — they make you jealous.
But what if we told you that friend could be you? And what if we told you that you could even do it for free?
This may sound like some too-good-to-be-true pipe dream, but it’s not. It’s as true as it gets, and it’s something you’re going to want to know about.
The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service is currently recruiting couples to look after Maatsuyker Island, which is just off the coast of Australia. Those selected will live on this little slice of paradise for six incredible months, either March to September or September to March.
Your only responsibility — other than having the time of your life — is maintaining the island’s grounds, taking care of the buildings and reporting daily weather observations to the Bureau of Meteorology. Simple.
No need to worry about finding an Airbnb — couples will be provided with a private four-bedroom house and their very own vegetable garden to grow food. Get your green thumbs ready.
But for all you single ladies and gents out there, don’t hold your breath. The keyword here is couples. Single travellers won’t make the cut, and couples are definitely preferred. That’s right, looks like you’ll be spending another Valentine’s Day binge-watching TV alone instead of enjoying the ocean sunsets of Maatsuyker.
Sigh, maybe next year.
For the rest of you lucky lovers, start packing your bags. This may just be the dream vacation you were waiting for.
But you’re not only living in paradise for six months — you’re living in a secluded paradise for six months. ‘Secluded’ here shouldn’t be taken lightly.
During your stay, you won’t have any TV or internet. That means no contact with the outside world, and no access to social media (gasp!). Guess you won’t be able to evoke Insta-envy to all your followers back home.
So once you’re on the island, you’re committed to it for the next six months. No seeing your friends, family or beloved dog. The only time you’ll be allowed home is if there’s an emergency.
You’ll also need to pack your own food, clothing, bedding and entertainment — all while keeping your suitcase under 325 kg. Good luck with that.
Keep in mind that the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service is pretty particular about the types of couples it’s looking for. Only those with a “proven ability to live and work in remote locations” who are “self-sufficient” and “healthy” will be considered. So if you’re already having trouble in paradise, this paradise isn’t for you.
But if you’re the type of don’t-need-nobody-or-nothing-else-to-stay-happy couple, then what are you waiting for? Pack your (light) bags, post your last Facebook update, and say goodbye to everyone you know – Maatsuyker awaits.
Get your applications in before January 30 if you’re up for the adventure.
